NDT timings

Hi everyone

I’m struggling a bit with medication/supplement and food timings now I am back on thyroxine and NDT.

I take thyroxine plus half grain of ERFA at 7.00 am and that’s fine, I leave an hour until breakfast.

But I am supposed to take another half grain at noon and I’m struggling because I assume that means I can’t eat between 10 am and 1 pm (2 hours before, 1 hours after). Is that right with NDT? I also take Lenzetto HRT spray and I need to leave 4 hours with that and thyroid meds, so I take at 4.00 pm now. I also have supplements I take vitamin D, calcium (I’m low in calcium so have to take it unfortunately, diet doesn’t work as I have had parathyroid tumours), B complex and magnesium (I take this at night).

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

Recommendation is to take NDT on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after food.

But I am supposed to take another half grain at noon

I don't think it would matter if you adjust that time. Just make sure that time gap is correct for supplements:

HRT, Vit D, calcium and magnesium require 4 hour gap

B Complex requires 2 hour gap

Thank you SeasideSusie.

If your HRT is a spray, it doesn't matter when you take it because it doesn't go into the gut. And, it's in the gut that things affect the absorption of thyroid hormone. :)

Ah ok, that’s interesting. Everytime I change my HRT dose, it does effect my thyroid levels which is why I’ve been taking them apart but maybe it doesn’t matter when I take them, perhaps it would effect the levels regardless.

Yes, I think it would. I think - although I have no personal experience - that taking HRT increases your need for thyroid hormone.

I think the same applies with the NDT re absorption. - I take mine by letting it dissolve in my cheek, no chewing . The idea is it's absorbed into bloodstream without digestion playing a part. That's what I was told some years ago anyway , you might like to check!

I’ve not heard that, thank you.

May I ask what brand of NDT you take? I’m looking for a brand that I can take sublingually. Thanks.

I think you can take most sublingually, I now take Erfa , but have taken previous brands , - naturethroid, Wp thyroid etc all this way, You just let it dissolve in your mouth rather than swallow or chew it....

Thank you. The ones I take have been discontinued and so far I have only found sugar coated tablets or capsules which will not work. I should have started a new thread I guess.
