How to split tirosint and t3 properly

I have finally been able to source tirosint and compounded t3 in the uk!! I am going on 50mg of tirosint and 11mg t3.

However I am not sure how to split this dose through out the day. I am on armour 1 1/4 grains and I take this split morning and before bed.

I did like the armour but I am still getting bad body aches, fatigue, a lot of hair loss (have lost most my hair now).

Also, my main issue on armour is my t3 is high 6.3 and t4 low at 11, tsh is 4.5. And increase on armour will push my t3 over range so I think being on separate t3/t4 may work out better.

I have hypothyroidism, I take my T3 once daily when I awake and wait an hour before I eat.

Dr John Lowe was an Adviser to Thyroiduk.org.uk before his accidental death. He was also a scientist/researcher.

He was a scientist/researcher/doctor and expert on the use of T3 as he took it himself.. He stated our dose had to saturate all of our Receptor Cells and they - in turn - sent out 'waves' throughout the day and this one dose could last for up to three days.

I took one daily dose of T3, took none on day two or day three and I had no symptoms. I've always taken T3 once daily and have never had a problem.

We will be hypothyroid for the rest of our lives.

So how would you suggest taking the medication. Should I take t3 am and t4 pm, or split t3 am and pm

You could just add some levo to your NDT to raise the FT4, if you think it needs raising. :)

I can’t tolerate levo at all. Allergic reactions

Tirosint is levothyroxine!

Ajva profile image
Ajva in reply to helvella

Yes with no fillers? Bit different than generic isn’t it. I have MCAS and react to the ingredients added to generic

helvella profile image

It does have "fillers" - they are glycerol, water and gelatin.

The active ingredient is exactly the same as in all the other levothyroxine products: Levothyroxine sodium.

In the UK we get packeted levothyroxine, made by a known company, and with a Patient Information Leaflet.

Although the odd person gets some seemingly anonymous tablets in a brown bottle, this is rare. Even then, they are entitled to the correct PIL for the product at the time it is dispensed.

If you are intolerant of specific ingredients, we do have a range of levothyroxine products. Some have no acacia, some have no lactose, some have no mannitol, etc.

Maybe you will do better on Tirosint?

Ah I see I didn’t know that. I have tried a few brands and seem to react to most of them. I will see how I go on tirosint. Worst case I will have to go back on NDT I can tolerate on a smaller dose but do get alot of histamine reactions. I will let you know how it goes!

Some MCAS suffers cannot tolerate gelatin.

some MCAS patients react to usually well-tolerated excipients, including those which are used by compounders

Ajva,

I was just going to say the same as helvella.

And if you prefer Tirosint out of all the levothyroxine brands you could always just add a bit of that to your Armour.

However, if you are changing to Tirosint and compounded T3, 50mcg T4 + 11mcg T3 is a good equivalent to 1.25 grains of Armour. I always prefer to split my T3 dose and bearing in mind you have been doing so also, I would suggest to take whole T4 dose and half T3 dose in the am and rest of T3 dose before bed.

Radd sound suggestion. May I ask how much T4 and T3 you dose with? And do you still have your thyroids ?

Ajva profile image
Ajva in reply to jgelliss

Yes I still have my thyroid. I will be taking 50mg t4 and 11 t3

Thank you for the reply. I was directing my question to Radd. Wishing g you better days ahead.

jgellis,

No thyroid left what so ever and DIO2 polymorphism. Presently medicating 1 grain Armour + 50 mcg levothyroxine, reduced to 1 grain Armour + 25mcg Levothyroxine during the summer.

Interesting. If I don’t get on well with the tirisont or compounded t3 I will try NDT 1 grain with another t4 drug.

Thank you so very much for sharing your experiences radd. Very interesting and very helpful. Which way do you find splitting or dosing with your full dose works better for you?

radd profile image
radd in reply to jgelliss

jgelliss,

I take 1/2 grain NDT + 50mcg Levo upon waking about 6.30am, and 1/2 grain NDT any time after 3pm depending on food timings, (ie a late lunch would dictate dose to be postponed until 5pm for instance).

Sometimes I forget second dose 😬 and so take just before bed. This new found tolerance of a more flexible afternoon approach couldn't have been tolerated a year or two ago and just demonstrates how our recovery is so ongoing. I know it took me 5 years of taking T3 before I could sleep without an electric blanket on my bed.

I also believe I needed that 20mcg T3 initially to saturate the starved receptors, and to get me back on my feet so to speak. Once we find that recovery path, different bodily systems all eventually synch and recovery momentum seems to gather. My T3 greatest gifts are clear thinking free from brain fog and an inner warmth.

Adrenal issues have previously prevented me from taking just one NDT daily dose (palps, jitteryness, etc) but I now wonder if I could tolerate it .... and then I think why change something that working well 😊

This is so interesting and very valuable. We all have individual needs that work the best for us. Exchanging information from one another is an eye opener that gives ideas that we never thought of . It gives us flexibility and options that many of us did not have and now we can incorporate some of the options one way or another into our own dosing regiments. Thank You very much for sharing.

Tirosint can't be split, maybe T3 in two doses

shaws profile image

There's no need to split doses as the aim is to saturate our T3 receptor cells which then send out 'waves' throughout the day.

The aim is gradual increases until we feel well and have no symptoms.

If you feel you're on 'too much' or get palpitations reduce your dose.

I take my Tirosint at 5pm daily and my T3 (in a custom compounded transdermal cream form) just before bedtime.

If you want to split Tirosint and are using the gelcaps they can be cut easily with a pill cutter.

Ajva profile image
Ajva in reply to milkwoman

Good idea. It is mainly the t3 I need to separate. I am changing from NDT as I am struggling with rapid heart rate. I already have Pots and the NDT seems to trigger this more.

I am hoping I can manage better on this new combination

I take Tirosint and would say you will not be able to split Tirosint. It is in capsule form or liquid, not a pill. You can still split your T3, however.

I think I need to re write my post. I am aware it is a capsule and can not be split. I am more asking how to dose the medication and split the t3 throughout the day. I like to take most my meds before bed.

Ajva, could you kindly say where you've sourced tirosint in the UK (and at what price)? My online search for it has drawn a blank so far. Thanks so much.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Ross

I think that Roseway can supply Tirosint - maybe also some of the other pharmacies listed here:

thyroiduk.org/if-you-are-hy...

Price I do not know. It is not going to be inexpensive.

Many thanks indeed helvella for the list of potential suppliers - really helpful!

Ajva profile image

Yes helvella was correct I source mine from Roseway labs. If you contact them they can put you in touch with practitioners that use them. It is expensive so I pay £200 for 3 months worth of compounded t3 and Tirosint

That's good to know Ajva - many thanks. By practitioners, you mean doctors willing to prescribe? Gosh, it is quite an expense, isn't it?
