Hello everyone! I always find very usefull info here, I am so gratefull I found this forum.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few years ago and thanks to this forum I managed to get well after many years of feeling ill and being treated by doctors as if everything was in my head, you know the feeling (prescribed antidepressants, given advice of doing more exercise, etc.)

Well, I recognized some of my symptoms on my 13 year old boy (being always cold, low energy, no motivation, constipation, etc.) so his pediatrician suggested me to test him. Here his results:

TSH 6.08. (0.51-4.3)

Free T4 1.06 (0.92 - 1.57) 21.54%

T4 6.05 (5.91 - 13.2)

T3 109.2 (73 - 199)

Unfortunatelly they did not test Free T3 or Antibodies, since his pediatrician said that only if there was something wrong with these results then she would refer him to an Endo and they will do more tests.

But what do you think? In my experience this would be a case of hypothyroidism just like mine. I will also ask for vitamins (B12, Ferritine, Folate and VitD) test, but I don´t know if they will do.

Thank you in advance for your comments. I will appreciate them very much. Have a great Sunday!

Ranita2020,

Sorry to hear about your son.

With that low FT4 and the now rising TSH above range, it's looking like primary hypothyroidism. With central hypothyroidism you don't get the rise in TSH due to faulty signalling when the problem is with either the pituitary or hypothalamus.

Primary hypothyroidism is when the problem lies with the thyroid gland and is usually caused by thyroid antibodies (Hashimotos). It is now important to get TPOAb & TGAb, FT3, ferritin, Vit B12, folate & Vit D tested. When doctors are uncooperative, members use private labs.

Post results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment.

Sorry you're both going through this, I went through the same thing with my own son.

Unfortunately, our experience wasn't great. He was 10 yrs when I first noticed symptoms and it took until he was 15 yrs to finally get treatment (thyroxine & B12 injections). Two years further on & he is now doing well.

Hopefully your experience will be much more positive but my advice is trust your instincts & don't give up. Nobody knows your child better than you. 🙂
