I have been on NDT for about 2 years and recent blood tests show that I am within range except for my TSH, which was 3.5. In order to bring my TSH down I increased the dosage from 1 grain to 1 1/2 grains, but when I do that, my heart starts racing, I have a resting pulse of 85 when it normally is 65. I rang the source in the States from where I purchase my supplies to find out what the ratio of T3 to T4 was, only to be told that they cannot tell me as their product is not a prescribed medicine but a food supplement.
I have heard of Dr. Lowe’s THYRO-Gold and wondered if I would be better to switch to that, as it might contain less T3.
Does none have any experience with this product. Could you please PM me as I am unsure if I am even allowed to mention the product name on this forum.
A thousand thanks, Gisela

If they cannot tell you how much hormone it contains, then it isn't NDT. NDT - Natural Dessicated Thyroid - is clearly marked on the bottle or the packet, how much T4 and how much T3 is in it. What is the name of this product?
Am I allowed to mention names? It is called Nutri-Meds bovine thyroid health. Whole desiccated glandular concentrate and I source it from the USA. It is classed as a health supplement, hence you can buy it without prescription .
Well, yes, your TSH would be high if you're hypo and not getting any exogenous hormone. But, you don't have to go onto Thyro-gold, you could try real NDT, with hormones in it, like Armour or Erfa.
Where would I get that? My doctor is clueless and said she could not help me, after I could not tolerate Teva. Her words: there is nothing more I can do for you, Mrs.James.
But, what is wrong with your doctor? Teva isn't the only brand of levo. There are lots of others. She can't do anything for you because she knows nothing about thyroid. Tell her you want a different brand.
Thank you so much for your help. It just goes to show the total ignorance of my GP (or perhaps total indifference?). Will approach her with a request for Aristo. She has probably never heard of it.
Thank you so much for your help. I will ask my Doctor for a prescription of Aristo, I have looked up the ingredients and don’t see anything in there that disagrees with me. All she is concerned about is her budget. Every time I see her, I can see £ signs in her eyes.
I'm afraid that's the state of medicine these days - or perhaps it always was? - it's all about money. And, to hell with the patients! Who cares if they get better or not as long as we're making a profit!
Aristo is new to the UK market and I do not know which pharmacies might be able to get hold of it. We have seen at least one person supplied with it - as a surprise rather than a request!
I do not believe that we can rely on doctors. Nor on pharmacists.
We have to take what we can from wherever we can get the help. Many here try hard to help others with the best of intent. Which is a jolly good start. But always take care as there are often different views, or information has gone out of date, or whatever.
Doctors, in these modern days, no longer are aware of any clinical symptoms - which doctors used in the past ,before the introduction of levothyroxine.
No matter what NDT one uses, this link may be helpful and is by the scientist who developed Thyro-gold so that it didn't need a prescription.
It is not in tablet form but capsules with powder. It comes in 1 and 2 grains, I have to open the capsule and halve it, as I only have the 2 grain variety. I then quarter it, to get 1/2 a grain or divide it by 8 to get a 1/4 grain.
It is obviously more difficult than a tablet being split but sometimes whilst doing that too, it might not be strictly divided. but as long as we take the approx amount always concentrate upon our symptoms and are they being relieved.
I have just remembered that about 10 years ago I was put on Levothyroxine which was specially made up for me because of my allergies. It was just T4 and cellulose as a filler. But I could not get on with it, as my TSH remained high and every time I saw my GP she increased the dose until I was buzzing with the stuff. I was on 150 mcg with a resting heart rate of 100 , which stopped me sleeping and I felt as if I had drunk 10 cups of strong coffee. Very unpleasant, and still my TSH was 7 or 8. That is when I decided to try a natural bovine desiccated thyroid extract and got my TSH down to 3.5. But greygoose, whom I greatly respect, says it contains no hormones and that is why my TSH remains highish. Therefore I thought I’d try Thyro-Gold as that contains hormones. Do I have to source it from the USA or is there an equivalent in the UK?
When I took Thyroid S I never increased by more than a 1/4 grain. If I felt jittery I would then decrease by a 1/4 grain. You have to do it gradually so your body gets used to it.
Not sure if I’m allowed to mention this on the forum or even private message so please correct me if possible.
I have been on Thyro-Gold for a few years and it most definitely has bovine thyroid content in levels that are not mentioned to keep the product prescription free.
I have No thyroid so it certainly is effective or might be dead by now.
In my eyes, Thyro-Gold is an NDT but made from cows and not from pigs.
If there was nothing in it, it simply wouldn’t work.
I would not recommend Thyro-gold now. It might have been a good supplement at some point in the past but it’s overpriced and poor quality now. I tried it recently, a few months ago, and it made me severely hypo.
Dr. Lowe’s wife Tammy assured that the Thyro-Gold formula is the same and has not changed since her husband was alive and out of love and respect for him and to honor his memory it will remain the same.
I had many questions for her when starting on it and these are her own words.
Please call or email Tammy and she will help you with any dosage questions.
It is expensive, but in my opinion worth it.
I do wish you good luck and that it works for you.
I know we are often willing to try anything that works and what works for one may not work for another.
It is certainly a tough and interesting life without a thyroid!
You do have to take enough for your condition.
But after being on T-4 only medication for over 20 +years and being miserable the whole time this has been a lifesaver. Was 80 pounds over weight.
Over the few years lost 40 pounds, hair and eyebrows improved, brain fog improved, and a whole list of other symptoms. No more muscle aches somehow caused by T4 only.
Normal cholesterol now.
I will never go on T4 again for the rest of my life.
I would rather die than do so.
Doctor refused to prescribe NDT so went this route.
If the product stops being produced for any reason, will source Cynomel from Mexico as in the past.
Would private message but don’t know how?
It is certainly rough when switching products pay attention to how you feel.
Yes, true, it might work for some but not others. So, for the sake of people who can only easily get a hold of Thyro-Gold, I hope they benefit from it.
I did email her asking for advice and dosage suggestions but she never replied. I even gave her a detailed background of my thyroid issues and medication history.
