Hi can I get help with my latest blood tests? I am currently taking 2 grain TR Man (previously 125mg levothyroxine). I don't feel too bad, however, ferritin low again, I have taken GP prescribed iron before but I can't seem to raise the level. Any suggestions on how to increase this number welcome (anything except liver). I take Vitamin D3, K2, B12, Magnesium, Selenium, Omega oil and B5 every day.
Just testing TSH and FT4, especially on NDT is completely inadequate. You need FT3 tested at same time as TSH and FT4
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test
Eating liver or liver pate once a week, plus other iron rich foods like black pudding, prawns, spinach, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily vitamin C can help improve iron absorption
I find that nothing raises my ferritin higher than the level you are now at. Liver might, but I am veggie, Cashew nuts, avoiding veg with lots of phytates and cooking in cast iron pans might help. A haem iron supplment might be better than GP's ferrous fumarate if you are not veggie.
