Vit D supplements

โ€ข13 Replies

My latest blood test result for Vit D is not as high as I want it to be:

63nmol/L( 30.0 - 200)

Result guideline says >50: replete

However, with muscle and joint pain being a problem for me I would appreciate recommendations for dose needed to raise it.At the moment I have a supply of vitamin D 3 ( 4000IU) and K2 tabs but confess I haven't been consistent in taking it every day.

(Slapped wrist!!)๐Ÿ˜ฑ Advice will be welcome and also for magnesium .

Vit B is at top of range so OK.

Very important to take your D3 regularly. Also it's very important to take magnesium. We need magnesium so that the body utilises D3, it's required to convert Vit D into it's active form. So it's important we ensure we take magnesium when supplementing with D3.

Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds if taking tablets/capsules, no necessity if using topical forms of magnesium.

To raise your current Vit D level of 63nmol/L (25.2ng/ml), the Vit D Council recommends supplementing with 3,700iu D3 daily so you are taking their recommended amount. Which brand/type Vit D supplement are you taking at the moment?

Best to check magnesium levels before supplementing, I was surprised to find mine were top end so supplementing was not advisable.

Thanks for that. My magnesium hasn't been tested so will probably have to wait a while to do that as have only just had a blood test.

The brand is Solgar, which I think is possibly OK? ......so looks most likely I'm not helping myself !! .......will start taking them every day .Thanks for your help on that.

My Magnesium Citrate is also Solgar.....high potency, highly absorbable 400mg.

I've never had problems with taking tablets, but these are hard to swallow, being about 1 inch long with no coating so don't slide down !

I am now remembering back to childhood( many many years ago !!!) when my mother used to crush tablets and mix with jam.๐Ÿ™†๐Ÿผ

Magnesium flakes are good added to Bath

Or you can get magnesium skin creme or oil too

Is your Solgar D3 a tablet or capsule? Are you taking it with plenty of dietary fat to aid absorption?

As for the magnesium citrate, if this is the form you need (I use it for bowel help) then you can buy magnesium citrate powder and make a small drink with it, you can use the amount needed to give you a comfortable BM, too much and you'd get diarrhoea. I use

Natural Calm Original which is unflavoured and I check Amazon and Ebay to see who is the cheapest.

Yes, my Endo told me to take Vit D with a main meal and that if there wasn't any fat in it to have a slice of buttered toast. At the time I was staying off butter and I jokingly asked if that was allowed,as I was dieting!........he said " you can have a doughnut if you want!!"..........Oh dear !!

However, time to get serious and concentrate on my health. The magnesium powder definitely sounds like a good idea..........thanks.๐Ÿ˜Š

My D3 is a capsule so easy to swallow.

OK, make sure there's some fat then to aid absorption.

K2 is also fat soluble and as it's a tablet it wont be containing any fat so again it needs some dietary fat. However, because both your D3 and K2 supplements contain no fat then you should take them at different times of the day otherwise they will compete for the dietary fat you take them with. This is why an oil based softgel or liquid is best, they contain their own fat so the D3 and K2 don't have to compete for the available dietary fat.
