Hi all,

I recently had my vit D tested the result was 55 nmol/ L (75-200). This is despite me taking 1000 IU of vit D every day for the past two years. The doctors has said this is borderline and no further action is required. Please can someone advise what my level should be and how to raise it? Is this essential in the conversion of T4 to T3 ? Thanks!

We seem to need higher maintenance dose than many other people, as you have discovered. 1000iu is not keeping your levels high enough.

You probably need find a higher dose. Possibly 3000iu daily, or take 5000iu for 2-3 months and retest to see where you are.

Private tests via NHS Birmingham hospital - vitamindtest.org.uk - £28

With Thyroid issues we seem to need vitamin D at least above 70nmol/L or even up to 100

Hi Cjtunnicliffe

Here is an article about the role of Vit D in thyroid disorders chriskresser.com/the-role-o...

The recommended level for Vit D is 100-150nmol/L.

1000iu is only a maintenance dose for some with a decent level. We all need a different maintenance dose.

To raise your level my suggestion is to take 5000iu for 6-8 weeks then retest. Once you've reached the recommended level I'd reduce to 5000iu alternate days or 2000iu daily depending on the dose of your supplement.

Private fingerprick blood spot tests can be done with City Assays for £28 vitamindtest.org.uk/index.html

The best D3 supplements are softgels like these bodykind.com/productsearch/...

When taking D3 there are important cofactors needed, read about them here vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

Magnesium comes in different forms, see them here naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

D3 and magnesium need to be taken four hours away from thyroid meds.

Check the other cofactors too.
