Recent NHS test = 54 nmol/l. (No ref range, but a note said that 36 to 60 nmol/l is adequate
By the way, 36-60 is not adequate. The Vit D Council recommends a level of 125nmol/L and the Vit D Society recommends a level of 100-150nmol/L and for your current level they suggest supplementing with 3,700iu D3 daily (nearest would be 4,000iu) along with D3's important cofactors.
How much magnesium do you take? We need Magnesium so that the body utilises D3, it's required to convert Vit D into it's active form. So it's important we ensure we take magnesium when supplementing with D3.
Sheesh! I have will have to try a different make I think.
For the calcium and magnesium (including K and D) I take Nature's Plus chewables. 600 calcium and 300 magnesium. I am a bit afraid of magnesium. It tends to loosen my stools and keeps me awake if taken too late in the day. Is 300 enough do you think?
I have osteoporosis and GP said to take calcium, but I have not been tested. I have wondered though whether I should be concentrating on lack of Vit D, as the reason why I have osteoporosis, rather than because of lack of calcium. Do you think I should stop the calcium then?
Is it OK to take magnesium without calcium?
Your link - I didn't realise there are so many forms of magnesium! Do you know if any of these keep one awake at night?
Baobabs has osteoporosis and has recently made a post about how well she's doing.
I think Hidden may also have some information about osteoporosis.
Is it OK to take magnesium without calcium?
Absolutely.
I didn't realise there are so many forms of magnesium! Do you know if any of these keep one awake at night?
I don't know but if it does then take it earlier in the day. I take magnesium citrate and magnesium taurate, my sleep hasn't been made any worse that it already was.
As I understand it, calcium always shows normal in the blood, because if levels are low, calcium is always taken from the bones. (thus causing OP). My GP has probably tested me in the past and calcium has therefore come back as normal via blood.
Is there another type of test for calcium?
I don't think I can take Boron cos I had oestrogen fed breast cancer 10 years ago and it affects hormones somehow.
If I take D3 and K separately, how much K do I take per day. Do I take 100 mcg's of K no matter what strength D3 I take?
SS you have lost me here! I bow to your superior knowledge. I do know I have always tested for good levels of blood calcium for years but still developed osteoporosis. I understand we do need high levels of calcium particularly post menopause and I ponder how anyone manages the daily amount through diet alone? I would guess there are many folk with low calcium levels but as always medics don’t test unless really pushed or some calcium deficient disease arises. As I’ve stated previously, I believe the causes of OP are many and complex.
I don't know, as I said calcium isn't my area of expertise. I've only ever had the two tests I've mentioned above - Serum and Ajusted Calcium and mine have always been in range. My GP has never mentioned my results, and I don't have osteoporis (as far as I know).
We do very occasionally see a member's calcium results below range. I have always assumed that a good level is when the result is in range, but as Baobabs has said she has always tested good levels of calcium but she still developed osteoporosis.
SeasideSusie is spot on with the calcium information. I have my levels tested every two months. Calcium, magnesium, boran, vit D and vit k2 mk7 all work in synergy. Take these at least 4 hours away from thyroid meds and any iron supplements. Can you be referred to someone who knows about bone health, a specialist in osteoporosis? Bone break down and rebuild is a complex matter. I got fed up of folk advising me to simply eat a yogurt daily. Weight bearing exercise is essential to stimulate the bones and cause rebuild. I recently came across the work of Dr Jason and Mira Calton on OP. Mira apparently had advanced OP at thirty and managed to reverse it without using OP meds. Check out their video information and their publication ‘The Micronutrient Miracle’. There is a compelling interview between this couple and the much respected Dr Isabel Wentz.
I have watched the Youtube video on micronutrients. Thanks.
That's another thing to research then. It is never ending isn't it trying to solve all this nutritional stuff. I like the idea that their product is in powder form.
I use the Delux spray 3000iu but have not had my levels tested whilst using this. I had previously used the H&B VitD3 drops and I know that this does work as my levels went up substantially. I think I need to get tested again.
This is my first attempt at Vit D and blood tests, so nothing to compare it with. I wonder how others get along with Delux? I will certainly need to look for something else.
