Going gluten free with hashimotos

hi - I have hashimotos and have had it for 15 years. I am on levothyroxine 125mcg/100mcg alternate days. Generally I have been well on this regime. What I am enquiring about is the hashimotos and coeliac connection. I have not had any gut problems with my underactive thyroid until now - although last blood test was within range for B12, ferritin and slightly low vitamin D - which I take a vit D tablet each day.

Recently I have been having diarrhoea and my tongue has been sore/swollen/bumpy for a long time - do others have this and do you think it is because of gluten intolerance? Should I be tested for coeliac or try a gluten free diet anyway?

Also what I would like to know is if you go on a gluten free diet and your intestines heal does that mean you are then able to absorb vitamins/iron/B12 normally?

Do you have results with ranges for B12 - Folate - Ferritin & VitD ? What is the VitD you are taking and how much ?

Tongue issues could be due to Low B12 or low Thyroid. If nutrients are low in range it may indicate an absorption issue and being GF could well help to heal the gut. Have you read DippyDames post of today about gluten ? - worth a read.

Coeliac testing can throw up false negatives so why not try cutting it out of your diet ...

Hello Marz - thank you for replying. My B12 in June this year was 301 ng/L, ferritin was 47 ug/L, vit D 42 nmol/L. I am taking vitamin D3 just a cheap brand from chemist 1000iu each day. I didn't know whether to take iron supplements as well but doctor said I am in range. I am having a couple of spoonfuls of blackstrap molasses each night.

Yes very interesting article about gluten - I am going to try gluten free and see if it makes any difference.

B12 would be better at a higher level - over 500 - so I am suggesting Jarrow Methylcobalamin 5000mcg lozenges under the tongue thus avoiding any gut issues. From Amazon. Then take the 1000 mcg. Also a good B Complex to keep all the B's in balance. B12 works with B9/Folate/Folic Acid in the body in an important way. Testing B12 after supplementing is of little value as results will be skewed.

I would take more VitD - say 5000 iu's until next test. Levels are suggested to be at least 100. Also take important co-factors magnesium and VitK2- MK7

VitD is fat soluble so best taken with main meal. I use Gel capsules that contain olive oil - Healthy Origins from Amazon.

Eating liver once a week should bring your Ferritin levels up to around 70. Doc saying you are in range is all they know - but where you are in range is key when there are thyroid issues. Try driving a car with petrol and no oil 😊

I take Thorne Research - again from Amazon. There are others suggested here - Igennus is one I believe 😊 Are you sorting the VitD too ?

Ok thanks for that will have a look. Vitamin d I am taking valupak vit d3 that pharmacist recommended - 1000iu. Is it important to take the vitk2-mk7 too? I will be rattling around at this rate!!

I too am Hashi's and have taken Better You combined Vit D K2-MK7 in their spray form. It bypasses the digestive system and goes straight into the bloodstream. They also do a B12 spray if that's helpful. Have found my levels have gone up using them.

I've also just bought their Iron in a spray, so will see how it goes (also eating pumpkin seeds & pate to increase iron).

I don't think 1000 IU's of VitD will raise your level to over 100. VitD is fat soluble and is best taken with the fatties meal or buy one containing olive oil - Healthy Origins - from Amazon are a possibility. Sprays are good too as suggested by Paula101 and will also contain the VitK2-MK7 ... Magnesium can be bought in powder form so no rattling !
