Keeping my T3

This week I went for a check up with a Rheumatologist I was sent by my endo who is constantly trying to get me to reduce/give up my T3 she is constantly telling me it's not good for me it will give me osteoporosis it's bad for my heart etc etc I am constantly telling her after 20 years with hyper and 20 years with hypo I think I can tell when I am over supplemented or not I do not have heart palpitations shaky hands bulging eyes constant restlessness I do have tiredness, brain fog, depression, bad nails no eyebrows thin skin Lichen sclerosis over weight and lots more, all of which are a work in progress and to some extent under control whilst I am taking T3 and Levo, my argument is that while I have the medication spot on I am able to loose weight if I exercise and diet like anyone else. So she agrees to prescribe for me. However she sent me to get bone density test and to see the Rheumatologist The first time I saw him he said there had been little change from my previous bone density test and as I was not able to take the normal ADCAL for bone strengthening due to stomach upsets hiatus hernia he would give me vitamin D and I was to increase the calcium in my diet. also see my dentist before he could consider infusion as the risks involved mean no tooth extractions advisable. So after a year I have a follow up appointment so I ring up and ask if they want me to have another bone density or blood test before I see him I get the blood test form and have it done about a week before the appointment . When I see him I ask about the blood test was It to measure my calcium or D3 ? he didn't answer so I asked again and he said no it was to measure inflammation which was all ok he dithered and mumbled and then said I see you have a Thyroid problem I said yes my endo was concerned about my bones because I take T3 and wanted to get it checked out. He asked about the T3 and said that I was taking it for all the wrong reasons !! I said I am not taking it to try to loose weight because it doesn't work like that, I take it because I do not convert Levo very well and adding T3 helps my Hypo symptoms. ( I wanted to say to him if I was taking it to loose weight it wasn't bloody working just look at me!! ) I asked him was my bone density results high low or medium he didn't answer just said he that it was at the stage where he would give me infusions but I said that my dentist was constantly doing work on my teeth and I was not altogether happy with infusion remedy. He seem to think it funny when he said that dentist run scared of infusions. He then said I should have another bone density test to see where it's at. What a load of waste of time I should have had the bone density done before seeing him and he should have done the blood test for calcium and vitamin D and how come he has an opinion on T3 and me when he doesn't even know me or my history!!!

Sorry rant over I do all this just to keep the endo happy so she will keep prescribing me T3 but I think the day is coming when she will refuse it , every time she sees me she just says you know what I recommend and I say yes but I feel that it is doing me good and we leave it there, she then writes to my GP saying she has recommend that I cut down and that I continue to disagree.

After all that Question: Can she just stop prescribing it.

Could I go to a private Endo who agrees to prescribe and my GP agrees to provide on NHS could I do that.

Your Endo is the only person who can stop your T3 with ‘proof’ that you don’t need it clinically.

I didn’t read the whole of your post just the bottom questions.

If you go to a private Endo - you will have to pay for a private prescription and source yourself.

Totally understand your rant, been the same since, 1984......Last year finally found T3 from private endo and, just on T3 now 25mg to 50mg daily, no T4 and, carrying on, with only T3 ......Goid luck and, rant away, we all totally understand, some of the medical people’s, lack on understanding, of us needing T3. Dafodils.

It the worst happens, its far cheaper to buy your own T3 from abroad over the internet.I have bought from Cyprus & Mexico,Much better quality than UK NHS T3 in my experience.

Thanks for the info but If I self prescribe T3 I think all NHS consultants would wash their hands of me the Rhuematologist's parting words to me were he would not treat me if I was taking something that might make the condition worse. !! nice man!!

Yes,I understand your concerns.I have washed my hands of NHS consultants,as after being prescribed T3 in 2014,it was withdrawn 2 years later & the endo said he would not "look after me"unless I went back to levo only & at a lower dose than I had previously been on for years.I knew that a suppressed TSH would lead to endless hassle, regardless of how well I felt,or how ill on levo.My GP has agreed to my thyroid blood tests, even though I am adding BYO T3.I've sinced moved on to NDT,but will do private blood testing at home if necessary.I hope you find an amenable consultant,& wish you well.

I was prescribed T3 by an endocrinologist, about 10 years ago. I continued to take Thyroxine at the same time as prescribed by my GP. Every few years, a new GP questions the Medication and refers me to hospital. I was abroad and ran out of Thyroxine and took only T3 for three weeks. I felt much better within a week. Now I just take T3 and so far, so good!
