Supplement help please :-)

Apologies for the essay but really wanted to give update and background and also it helps me to understand it abit better writing it out :-)

I recently joined and have received a lot of help with regards to my newly diagnosed hypothyroid with antibodys aka hash's and wandered if you could offer some advice? I'm still feeling rubbish, currently on 25mcg but due a blood test in the next week or so to review. I have researched a lot (with help from you all) and feel fairly confident with what my numbers should be so will request increases as appropriate!

Since starting levo (approx 2/3 days in I have been experiencing weird symptoms muscle weakness particularly right hand and pins and needles in hands and feet, ringing ears. MRI showed no abnormalities but two Drs not convinced it's connected to thyroid or medication! Hmm.. I've toyed with the idea it could be b12 deficiency? Or thyroid imbalance? Will be seeing my dr tomorrow to discuss what next with this as it's really debilitating, especially with two under 2s to look after!

Due to my poor vitamin blood results last month as posted on my previous post I have been actively taking a variety of supplements over the last four weeks and wondered if anybody could take a look to see if I'm doing this accurately/ or missing anything else vital!!

Levo 25mcg with water 7am (no food or coffee for an hour)

11am B12 jarrows lozenges 5000 mcg under tongue (b12 was 203 blood test but cut off range was 180 so considered fine!!)

11 am Thorne basic B complex (low but normal range folate)

Some point after 11 - 2pm I take Vit D spray from in sunflower oil 3000 iu

1pm 1 ferrous sulphate tablet with vit C 1000mg (due to low ferritin)

11pm 1 ferrous sulphate and vit c 1000mg.

I have just bought some natures way selenium 200mcg when should I take this?

Am I missing anything else!

Thank you for reading this far if you have :-)

Tiff35,

Taking 25mcg Levothyroxine for 3 days will not have started improving your thyroid imbalance. It's not uncommon to notice weird symptoms when starting Levothyroxine. They usually resolve within a week or two. If not, of course they should be investigated.

Pins and needles in hands and ringing in ears are often due to low B12 but as you're supplementing 5,000mcg daily that is unlikely. If the pins and needles persist ask your GP to check calcium.

Check whether selenium should be taken with or away from food. If like most supplements it should be taken with food just take it with lunch or dinner.

Thanks for your reply, I realise that levothyroxine does not work instantly i have been on it for 5 weeks now and feel as rough as when I started it! The ringing ears, pins and needles are still persisting . Maybe it could be due to an underprescription of levothyroxine causing negative feedback if anything, but guess my next blood results will tell. The annoying thing is I felt much better before I started on the underactive thyroid road. I've been told it could be temporary postpartum thyroiditis which is causing me all these imbalances and "could" sort itself out! Will wait and see I guess. With regard to the selenium It says take with food, I guess my question was really more about the timings and if I should avoid taking it with other certain vitamins.

Tiffs35,

I misread your post. thought you said you'd been taking Levothyroxine for 2-3 days. You probably are undermedicated as 25mcg is the lowest dose which can be prescribed. You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine to see whether dose is sufficient. Arrange the blood test early in the morning when TSH is highest and fast (water only) as TSH drops after eating and drinking. Take Levothyroxine after the blood draw.

I'm not aware that selenium interacts with other vitamins.
