Newbie feeling lost in a thyroidless world!!

Hi all, sorry if this goes on a bit but I'm a newbie on here who has just got home from hospital after a total thyroidectomy yesterday and I feel completely lost, I've been sent home with a 2 weeks sick note, painkillers and I have been started on 75 mcg of levothyroxine, I asked about my calcium levels and was told the 2 blood tests I had yesterday were within range so I was okay.

I feel there should have been questions I needed to ask but haven't.

The reason for the TT was, my bloods showed I was over active but I had underactive symptoms and I had multiple toxic nodules on my thyroid gland with an increasing goitre, it has taken me over twenty years of pestering my GP telling him something wasn't right, numerous scans and needles stuck in my neck to get here, I'm relieved its happened but I've read so much now on vitamins, natural thyroid, other alternative meds I'm all over the place with what to do, or stick with Levo and see how I get on, I was previously on Carbimazole pre op.

Im having my neck clips removed Fri am, does anyone's have any tips for what I could/should be asking my GP,

Thanks for reading!

Welcome to our forum and am sure those who've had thyroidectomies will respond.

You must feel quite out on a limb at present to be without your gland and not much info from the medical profession.

It's too early to look at alternatives yet. Give levo a trial and the GP/Endo should increase your dose by 25mcg about every six weeks and hopefully you will feel much improved.

Blood tests should be at the very earliest possible, fasting (you can drink water). You should fast although you can drink water. Also allow a gap of 24 hours approx between your last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards. This keeps the TSH at it highest and prevents the doctor adjusting dose unnecessarily.

Also ask for B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

It will take months for your system to settle down and see how you are doing. In the short term I would ask for copies of your blood tests and file them away.
