Finally got my vit d results.. trainee dr said it was inadequate and is giving me tablets at strength of 800

Results are: 36 .. inadequate 30-50, optimum over 50

Reading on here I should be getting strength 5000?

Dr said I don't need vit k, do I need it with vit d?

I'm getting my own b12, complex b, iron, selenium and vit c

Thanks xx

Yes, if you're not optimal 800 won't help. I'd do 5000 per day for a few months and retest. Ensure you take it w some fat as it will help it be retained.

tilomilo Doctors aren't trained in nutrition so he wont know anything about Vit K.

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food. If it is not directed to bones and teeth the calcium can settle in arteries and soft tissues and can cause things like calcification of the arteries and kidney stones. K2-MK7 will direct the calcium to bones and teeth and away from arteries and soft tissues.

Here is the Vit D Council's article about D3's important co-factors vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

800iu D3 wont help raise the level of a sunburnt flea. You need 5000iu daily and I would take it for 3 months then retest. You are aiming for a level of 100-150nmol/L. Once you've reached that level reduce to 5000iu alternate days or 2000iu daily. In summer, if you are out in the sun each day with a fair amount of skin uncovered and no sunscreen, you may not need any or a reduced amount of D3.

Retest once or twice a year to stay within the recommended range. If your GP wont retest (and it is doubtful if he will) then you can do a fingerprick bloodspot test with City Assays. You could also check to see if Blue Horizon or Medichecks offer them and see which is cheapest.

Have a read of the other topics on the Vit D Council website vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

Does this look ok for supplement schedule.. not bought everything yet.. hard fitting it in, feel it all needs swapping round as someone said ideally should have b's before lunch! Pharmacist said can't have d with c, so maybe Levo should move to before bed and swap everything else lol

B vits can be stimulating, hence he advice to take no later than lunchime as it could possibly interfere with sleep.

You also need magnesium when taking D3, this is calming so best taken in the evening.

D3, iron and magnesium should be taken four hours away from Levo.

D3 and K2 should be taken with dietary fat, so either the fattiest meal of the day or if you buy the K2 softgels mentioned in an earlier post they have oil added to aid absorption, so could actually be taken with something like a full fat yogurt or other snack containing fat. A good D3 softgel is this one bodykind.com/product/2463-b...

tilomilo That looks almost OK. However, I would just say that you need to keep the iron two hours away from other supplements, so that's the selenium and magnesium (I don't know about the Tranexamic acid). And you need to keep the magnesium four hours away from Levo.

Do you get up during the night for the loo? That's when I take Levo, I find it's easiest. As long as you take your Levo four hours before your morning iron that will be OK.

It really is difficult, which is why I eat liver to raise ferritin instead of trying to fit iron supplements in (they bung me up anyway so I can't really take them).

At the moment I'm up all hrs throughout the night as I have a 7 month old who is breastfeeding and still not sleeping through, which really isn't helping as I'm not sure if this is the main reason I'm exhausted or the thyroid and low levels of everything else lol

The problem would be that it wouldn't be the same time each night.. would this make a difference?

Thank you :)

tilomilo Some people say you should take your Levo at the same time every day. I don't see that myself because it's possible to take a weekly dose rather than daily!

I wake for the loo at different times. I have taken it at 2.30, 3.30, 5am and 7.30am. It doesn't make me feel any different. At the moment, it's usually around 7.30am.

Experiment, see what works best for you.

Hi, I think that iron has to be taken away from milk and dairy as it can stop the uptake. Can't remember where I read it.
