Have a look here: imperialendo.com/for-doctor...

I'm slightly confused by the results - is your result 25? - but you'll see on that link that if your levels are low enough you'll need a loading dose for a period to get you back on track. A normal supplement of 800-1000 won't do it.

Look for d3 and k2 in one supplement and take w some fat to aid absorption.

The result is 20.7 nmol/L - much, much too low.

Who did your vitamin D test? The NHS or was it a private one?

The reason I'm asking if your figure is 20.7nmol/L and it is an NHS test you need to go back to the practitioner asap and get them to prescribe something. Ideally they should be prescribing you around 10,000IU of D3 per day. Only if they don't prescribe enough should you be buying your own vitamin D3 supplements.

It was private hospital in the UK who did the blood test. I'm in Germany at the mo working for a few weeks. I'm still waiting to speak to GP on the phone to know what to buy to treat myself as I can't pick up a prescription.

I sent you a PM with links to a few NHS trusts though I don't know where in the UK you permanently live.

There are other NHS trust who believe that 800IU is enough for adults who are severely deficient. It isn't.

If your GP suggests anything under around 10,000IU per day question him/her about what trust guidelines s/he is following.

GPs don't recommend co-factors and say they are rubbish/not needed. However as someone who was severely deficient a few years ago I discovered GPs and loads of medical staff know absolutely nothing about nutrition and exercise. Therefore if your calcium level rises or you experience more bone and muscle pain they won't understand why, which is why you want the magnesium and K2.

You can buy 10,000IU D3 supplements online from Amazon and some online pharmacies however it would be better if you can get the high dose ones on prescription. (Oddly enough the first line of treatment in the UK is not a vitamin D injection any more.) The 5,000IU and lower D3 supplements you will end up having to buy yourself. The common though now is that you should take D3 supplements daily rather than once a week or over longer periods as this mimics nature better.

Just been to the German pharmacy and they D3 10,000

120 tablets for €15.00

Says to take 1 Tablet every 10 days. This corresponds to a daily consumption of 25ug (1000IU, 500%RM)

You need the loading dose as Bluebug says. My Vit D level was 15 and I actually started on a higher loading dose but not everyone can manage that, so 10,000iu daily should be fine for you. If you buy the 5000iu strength, you can use 2 of them daily for your loading dose and reduce to one daily afterwards, then when you reach the recommended level of 100-150nmol/L reduce again to 5000iu alternate days.

The info said to take 1 10,000 tablet every ten days.

You mean I should take a 10,000 tablet every day yes ?

YES!

That's why I sent you the links from 3 NHS trusts.

(Sorry for the shouting)

I should add when I was getting my high dose supplements on prescription the pharmacist was equally confused as it was probably the first time they seen someone who needed such a high amount.

As it took a few weeks for the CCG to confirm my prescription was correct and for him to find the tablets, he told me to take a 2,500IU supplement daily.

The actual tablets I was prescribed were 20,000IU e.g. nearly 10 times as much.

Yes, as Bluebug said further up in her reply. Quote:

"Ideally they should be prescribing you around 10,000IU of D3 per day." and

"The common though now is that you should take D3 supplements daily rather than once a week or over longer periods as this mimics nature better."

You need a loading dose (mine was 40,000iu daily for two weeks then I reduced to 5000iu daily and I increased my level from 15 to 190 in two and a half months). 10,000iu daily should be fine for you.

If you follow the pack instructions of 1 x 10,000iu tablet every 10 days then you are getting the equivalent of 1000iu daily which isn't even a maintenance dose for most people during the winter.

Hypohelen,

I was prescribed 40,000iu x 14 days followed by 2,000iu daily x 8 weeks which raised my vitD from <10 to 107. I agree with the advice above to supplementing 10,000iu daily for a couple of months and then reduce to 5,000iu daily for another couple of months and then retest to check levels. Take vitamin D 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

When I was tested by a specialist 15 years ago I was <10 so she started me on 100,000 twice a week for 3 months then tested again and the test showed I was close to acceptable levels so the specialist told me to take 6,000 units daily for the rest of my life. I'd like to know my numbers now but when my doctors put it on a blood requisition it is ignored unless they write in capital letters in the extra instructions box on the req. form "required by specialist" the labs ignore the request for the test. The specialist told me that everyone who lives above the middle of the U.S. (I forget what the latitude or longitude number is) is deficient in Vitamin D.
