How much do I take? NDT Thiroyd?

Hi, I have taken the huge step for me and ditched the Levo and bought some NDT from Thailand (Thiroyd) as my Endo has me on 350mcg of T4 plus 20mcg T3 with very little improvement in my symptoms and little movement in my labs. My question do I go about knowing the correct dose of NDT to start with?? I hope someone can help. Many thanks in advance.

  • Glittercat,

Your current doses are equivalent to 5.5-6 grains NDT. That contains 45mcg T3 which may be too much of a leap from 20mcg. I suggest you drop the 20mcg T3, reduce Levothyroxine to 275mcg and introduce 2 grains NDT. Every 2 weeks you can reduce Levothyroxine by 75mcg and raise NDT by 1 grain.

  • Thank you. Sorry for my complete ignorance, but what do you mean by a 'grain'? is that one tablet?

  • GlitterCat,

Traditionally NDT dose has been measured in 'grains'. 1 grain = 60/65mg tablet containing 38mcg T4 and 9mcg T3.

  • Ah!! Thank you so much, it all becomes clear now :)

  • That depends upon whether you bought the tablets in 1 grain, 2 grain, 3 grain etc. Please check.

  • Start on a low dose and build up over a few weeks. My theory is that doctors tell you todo a direct swap so they can rule out NDT in any form. Personally I stopped my levo fot 2 weeks before starting NDT simply because levo is a storage hormone and can stay in your system for 7 weeks! I started on 1/4 grain and built it up till I had no symptoms. I could not believe how well I felt even on a low dose.
