Hi all, just wondering about Mebeverine as my GP has prescribed this in the past, and I have it on repeat prescription. I do not take this regularly, as I seem to find that I can't take it before my evening meal as I have to take other meds then.Just wondering if anyone has taken the 2x a day slow release med. I did ask my GP but he ignored my request. To take 1 in the morning and 1 at bedtime would be good for my other med regime.

I feel I would like to give this a try now as I have just taken myself off Amitriptyline and I am experiencing some lower left side pain and waking me in the night.

Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Thank you all Pollyboo

I find that neither Mebeverine or peppermint oil makes much difference to my cramps at all. Only take one in extremis just in case it helps any.Eventually my cramps subside but sometimes last overnight.

Also have a salbutomol inhaler which thought to shorten rectal cramping but again no immediately noticeable effect.

I didn't know that about salbutamol. I used to be prescribed it for asthma, but can no longer tolerate it unfortunately. It is quite a common item, so this information may be helpful for some people. Thank you.

I take 135mg Mebeverine just twice a day once before breakfast and another around 5pm. It does seem to slow the transit time down and I have been taking it now on repeat prescription for well over 12 months. I am supposed to take it 3 times a day but twice a day seems to keep me on an even keel. I still have anxiety though with IBS and am also on 10mg Amitriptyline. Have been advise to increase this to 20mg but I really don't want to due to weird dreams I already have. I did try reducing this by cutting a tablet in half but after 2 weeks I felt worse than ever so back on 10mg. Good on you though for coming off it. Could you try taking just two mebeverine maybe the 2nd one in the afternoon? It's worth a try

Hi, thanks for your reply, I will just try to take twice a day I think and see how I go for a couple of weeks. It was hard to come off Amitriptyline but it made my legs so restless that I couldn't keep still at night. IBS causes us to be very anxious I know as we don't know how we will be from one day untill the next, and find it difficult to plan ahead.I have been off Amitriptyline now for 3 nearly 4 weeks so as it is hopefully out of my system, thought I would give the Mebeverine a try.

Thank you once again take care.

Hi Polly boo it's a nightmare isn't it!!! I would try taking it at bedtime and see how you go. I am sure it can't do any harm and it might just put your mind at rest. Take care and all the best

You need to try taking just 2 over the course of a day and see if it helps. If you take it afternoon time, best to still eat something light 20 mins later. Hope it works for you.

Made me a lot worse so stopped taking it about 10 years ago. It might suit some people but did nothing for me, so I managed things myself.

Hi, yes I have tried on and off and I thought this might be the case. Had a couple again the last 2 or 3 days and I don't think much has improved. Not really convinced, as you say just manage things day to day, I don't think there is a cure, but we live in hope,

Take care Pollyboo

Hi, I was on Mebeverine a number of years ago and managed OK with it - cant remember reason but my GP swapped and put me on Alverine Citrate - I would imagine and may be wrong but GPs like to swap due to medication costs. As I have suffered off and on for a few months, I may go back to my GP and suggest swapping back. More recently, I have been suffering with indigestion type pains and some loose stools but its all related i'm sure.

Hi, thanks for replying, have suffered for 20yrs with IBS and tried everything to try to cure my tummy. I have really come to the conclusion we can only manage our symptoms day to day as best we can. There is no cure and one medication gives you side affects and then you take another relieve those.I sound very negative this morning , but I am not and just being realistic.

I hope you feel better today all the symptoms I agree are all related, I don't think the GP realy knows what to do for the best. They follow a criteria do the tests and come back with IBS.

Take care of yourself Pollyboo
