Has anyone else been prescribed Mebeverine for the treatment of IBS? I was and have been taking it 20 minutes before meals for the past few months. I was also put on a Low Fodmap diet, which I find extremely difficult to bear :-/ But the other day, I ate some chicken stew with onions in it and I got a bad belly ache and had slight diarrhoea all night. This led me to wonder how much the Mebeverine helps or if it actually helps at all? So I haven't taken any for the past couple of days and I don't appear to have had any undesirable symptoms.....

Took them for quite a while and they gave some relief. I stopped drinking tea or coffee and changed to rooibos (red bush) tea and it seems to have mostly settled my stomach problems. If I do occasionaly get a flair up I use silicon gel and it soon settles again

Do not just stop taking the meds after one incident. It might still be helping but it is not a cure.

Hi I have been taking it for 3 years and I am on the low fodmap diet. I think it could be the onions, as they are high in fodmaps and a definite no go. Unfortunately sticking to the low fodmap is the only way to really control it for me. Mebeverine does help with the cramps and slows down digestion. Hope you feel better soon.

I never eat onions and unfortunately find that so many products have onion powder in them which can be even worse due to it being a concentrate

Ive had ibs for 26 years, the low fodmap wasnt even around when i was diagnosed. So spent a lot of time figuring it all out. I take mebeverine, but not as prescribed 🙄 i manage my ibs 99% through diet. If i have a flare up or its the wrong time of the month, is when i take mebeverine, but not with meals (i take it when the pain starts) which then reduces or stops it. (Not that i advocate, changing the way they are prescribed - its just how they work for me)

Everyones body is different and what your triggers are will vary, so ive never understood the fodmap diet as one size doesnt fit all and theres so many of the foods in the diet i can but also cant eat. I know i can eat onions no bother - can they are one of my staple foods - there in nearly everthing i make. i learnt early on its not just what you eat, its hormones and how your feeling.

Exercise, relaxation and meditation, really help too. I know this a strange and unsettling time for everyone. Try going for some nice walks, look at things like the headspace app, im sure they do free trials.

Dont get me wrong, its not easy to get to a comfortable place, it took me years to get there, my best help was my diary, i dont mean like Adrian Mole, but a food, drink, hormones and feelings one, helps you to identify triggers.

Not just food, but hormones (3 days every month it doesnt matter what i eat, i have diahorea, but with trial and error ive learnt if i dont have meals on these days, just small snacks, its much less painful and easier to manage).

You've had IBS for 26 years? Oh, bloody hell!!! What foods have you found start you off? Do you stick to gluten free bread, pasta and cereals? I hate gluten free food, especially the bread, which is really dry and can never be folded over like normal bread. But everything gluten free is so expensive too - you get half as much of everything for twice the price :-(

I must admit that I've always hated exercise. The only exercise I used to enjoy was dancing but I don't even enjoy that now being indoors, on my own. I've never been much of a lover of walking just for the sake of it either but I did go for a couple of fairly long walks with my daughter last month, before she moved out. But again, I wouldn't enjoy trying to walk to anywhere pleasant near where I live, all on my own :-/

I started trying to keep a diary of everything I ate, at what time of day and of any undesirable symptoms I got. But I only kept it up for a week or so because I couldn't see any pattern that could help identify triggers.

Basically, I'm just bone idle really: I can't even be bothered to cook for myself very often. My Ex on the other hand, always cooks himself proper meals. I started to make a batch of cottage pies the other day but I only got as far as cooking the mince and that was that! I would seriously buy ready meals all the time, if only I could find some that didn't have gluten or onions in them!

Hello, I am so glad you mentioned hormones, I am convinced that my IBS gets worse at certain times of the month and doesn't matter what I do or eat, I just have to go with it! I am currently in menopause so have really bad days. I do follow formal but fine it is very restrictive and like you I can eat something's no problem.

The best thing you can do to help yoursef is a diary, but it takes months, to see trends. For me it wasnt just recording items of food like a loaf of bread or a curry - u need to record all the ingredients.

For me there was no easy fix, some of my main triggers are dairy and corn/maize (modified starch), which is in nearly all ready meals. So back to basics, cook everything fresh. Start with a few foods and slowly add to them. Please watch for times of the month, if your stressed, upset, tired they could impact on how you feel.

Unfortunatey theres no easy answer, everyones intolerences are there own. You need to put the work in to try and help yourself, as its never as simple as taking a tablet 😔

If you like dancing there are lots of online dance classes - give them a try, exercise is excelent for both your physical and mental health - theres some fun free zumba on youtube 💃💃💃

Thank you very much for your response Daj20. Would you mind telling me how you kept a diary of everything you ate - including all the ingredients? I mean, did you buy a special diary or did you find one to print or save to your computer online?

And I will have a look on YouTube to see if I can find any dance classes :-)

PC's werent that common all those years ago, so it was a paper- colour coded diary.

Your luckier now, you could do a spreadsheet, or there are some apps available, much might help with some of the tracking. Good luck it is seriously worth the effort to minimise the pain and discomfort.

I did try lots of othet things to help, fibergel, peppermint, aloe vera, pro biotics - nothing really helped but the excluding of the things that caused the issues. (I went with the never say never, and give everything a try - when you feel so bad, you'll try anything)

I’ve been taking it for years. I can probably just about eat a small breakfast without it or a (gf) biscuit or something, but if I don’t take it my stomach goes into painful spasms as soon as food hits it. Personally I can’t eat even a trace of an onion without being really ill, so it could have been what you ate. FODMAP is tough going, but it’s not just about removing them, it’s about reintroducing, seeing which ones you react badly to and then adapting your diet to that. Good luck

Hello I currently am taking Mebeverine , only been taking it approx a month so can’t say about any long term effects.

I would say it definitely does help me , I do still have flare-ups at times after eating

trigger foods such as onions, dairy products etc but the flare-ups aren’t as bad as before. Before I used to have unbearable stomach cramps , bad bowel movements and vomiting whereas now after taking the tablets I just get a bit of an upset stomach and need to go to the toilet more than usual.

I do take my tablets at least 30-40 minutes before food so I can let them settle in my stomach before eating maybe this may help?

The tablets aren’t going to automatically make your symptoms go away unfortunately I really wish they would! They are supposed to relax your symptoms of IBS so that if you do have an episode they are more bearable. IBS is best managed with a diet that your stomach agrees with and taking medication daily.

If your still not sure what your trigger foods are try the elimination diet and keep a food diary. Introduce a new food everyday, then if you do have a flare-up you know that it’s this food that caused your symptoms then you can avoid these foods in the future.

It is worth perservering with FODMAP diet+Mebeverines.I find Buscopan helps with wind pains.Good luck!

I have been taking mebervine for 3 years without any side effects. However I cannot digest onions so have avoided them for a long time. Anything spicy or with onions really upset my stomach. xxx

Mebeverine helps the spasm, anybody get a bit lighter colour poops when taking Mebeverine.
