Mebeverine

Does anyone take Mebeverine for their IBS? I've stopped taking it after many years because it appears to do nothing at all to help my symptoms. I've also taken Omeprazole for non-ulcer dyspepsia for years & years. I still take this but my IBS symptoms are horrendous at the moment. Has anyone been prescribed something better than Mebeverine for their IBS?

Sorry you are having a bad time at the moment, along with trying to sleep well, hard as l do nights, managing my anxiety levels helps, amatriptaline, dosulepin and vensir DL help with this. Also fennel, peppermint tea and kefir. No easy answer, if all else fails be kind to yourself, accept it's not such a good day and snuggle up with a book. Good luck, hope it doesnt go on too long before you feel better.

I tried mebeverine, many years ago when my IBS first started but gave it up soon after as it did nothing. I have never found anything to help my IBS. You don't say what your symptoms are ie diarrhoea or constipation.

Thanks Maureen1958. It's IBS with diarrhoea, cramps & wind. As I've got older, I very rarely have a day free from it. I've been worse since last october-ish when I had covid, but not convinced that's got much to do with it. Sorry you're suffering too. Btw I misunderstood the tags and deleted the ones I should have kept and vice versa 🤯.

Have you tried imodium or pepto-bismol (I prefer pepto myself) for the diarrhoea. I wondered if I had COVID myself right at the beginning of it kicking off as things seemed to have changed a lot with my IBS.

Tried imodium recently - was really excited for about 2 days because it seemed to work, but then was worse than ever. Haven't tried pepto-bismol, but a couple of days ago tried Senocalm IBS - again seemed to work for a day or two, but then felt really ill and couldn't go to the loo. Will try pepto next. One thing I have noticed - coffee makes my symptoms worse, so now trying to cut down on caffeine. Thanks for your sympathy!

The good thing about pepto is that it's a liquid so you can take as little as you like. I just take a little bit when I do have it, which is not very often. But when I do take it I can feel it doing something straight away but when I take imodium I usually feel more like going to the loo and then bunged up the next day.

I drink coffee before going to the loo to help get it out quicker. But I buy caffeine free coffee. The coffee itself can have a laxative effect especially when it's hot. If I want a coffee during the day, I make cold coffee (just a little hot water to dissolve the coffee and suger and then fill with cold milk) and can get away with that usually.

By the way, the Pepto can make your poo dark so don't get in a panic if you get black looking stools.

I used to take Mebeverine, but stopped taking it too , I now take Colpermin, but that doesn’t seem to do much either , but it might be worth a try as it could help you ?

It’s an antispasmodic the same as mebeverine .

I’ve tried mebeverine twice and I found it did nothing for me except constipation I am also on omeprazole which I have to take everyday for gastritis or else I just feel ill 😩 I’ve tried alverine twice aswell which I had bad reactions to and amytriptiline which made me very depressed so I’ve basically given up on medication and just try to monitor how I eat instead and peppermint tea, I also had an episode of diarrhoea from 4am in the morning following day and the day after and only had buscapan at the time which kinda helped and drank plenty of water I wasn’t sure what triggered it off at the time but it was horrible hope you feel better real soon

Gave up on Mebeverine too. Currently take Alverine when I get a flare and seems to help, no adverse affects.

My son takes mebeverine and says it helps. I found it made things worse. I took Omeprazole for a couple of years but it increasingly made my IBS worse. I got to the point where I was having agonising stomach pain every night and had pretty much stopped eating. The pains were worse than labour pains! I stopped taking it and within 36 hours the pains stopped. I was able to eat things I hadn't eaten in a very long time. Unfortunately when you stop this type of medication the stomach acid comes back with a vengeance. I then took Ranitadine but even that caused problems because it has minute amounts of caster oil or macragol in it so I took Zantac which was brilliant but they then withdrew it for some reason. I have tried other medications like Omeprazole but they all caused pain so there must be a common ingredient that causes pain. I've read on here that a lot of people have problems with Omeprazole. It's only supposed to be prescribed for no longer than a month.

That's really interesting carlettejaque, I might stop the Omeprazole for a while as an experiment. I would talk to my GP first but these days you can't talk to an actual doctor, a nurse if you're lucky, the receptionist if you're not!

All I was given was Buscopan but did nothing for me. After a really long and bad bout of IBS I spoke to nurse who gave me Mebeverine. I find it's working fine although I have also gone to lactose free milk and yogurt. Stopped all supplements, cod liver oil and glucosamine. Nurse said sometimes the coatings are changed and can cause upset. So, Mebeverine working for me....at the moment anyway.

I was advised to try wheat free diet for 3 weeks and take Metamucil drink before bed, instead of the mebeverine and laxido, it does help

I used to use mebeverine in the early days and it worked well. After many years it stopped helping and the only thing that helped was imodium and latterly diet/probiotics. I will pm you some tips.

Mebeverine tabs were no good for me but the time release caps do the trick along with Imodium when necessary. But I suppose the body can get use to meds so they become less effective. Keep looking for something that helps you, good luck.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to reply with that! I meant to search the forum for wheat free. I've never tried mebeverine, I've been attempting dairy free for 4 days, no difference yet, thinking about trying to exclude yeast. We'll try anything, hope you get a solution soon ,

Hi, I suffered continual gut problems when young. I found out it was caffeine so I now avoid it except for a little chocolate which is a problem as it contains milk. If I eat the dark chocolate, it contains more caffeine so only a little at a time.I do have ibsc which I guess goes with fibro. I switch between mebeverine. Alverine, gaviscon and bicarb mainly. Giving each one time off to avoid my system getting too used any one of them.

Like others, a new medication seems to work fine to start with then doesn't.

I think my anxiety has a lot to do with my gut problems.

Hi, I was prescribed buscopan & Imodium, I thought the buscopan wasn,t working but it takes time, the immodiums help if they are taken about an hour before I go out anywhere & im also on amitriptyline because I suffer anxiety & the ibs makes me more anxious.

I too take Nebeverine fir my IBS and it doesn’t seem to fo anything so J take Buscopan as well which you can, and Colpermin a mint oil capsule. None of it seems to do much. Calming my nerves with Benzodiazepines seems to work best but Drs are getting so unwilling to prescribe them and give you the 3rd degree when you ask. A glass of wine or port seems to help the tummy ache as well, relaxing the gut.

I have found amitryptaline works. I am now on low fodmap diet which has made a huge difference with the symptoms but am really struggling with the reintroduction phase

Hi, just came across your reply, I'm also on amitriptyline and over 2 weeks into low fodmap. I thought it was helping a bit, I am doing dairy free and using gluten free bread and pasta. But I'm still very bloated and in pain /dodgy feeling. I'm wondering if the gluten free bread is an issue! What sort of things did you eat on the diet?

2littlecats profile image
2littlecats in reply to SKWEKER

Have you looked at the lists you can get? Onion and garlic should also be removed and various fruits etc. I have found it quite complicated

SKWEKER profile image
SKWEKER in reply to 2littlecats

I have the monash app and I bought a book. I have removed all onion and garlic, only veg I eat are potatoes, carrots, cucumber and spinach. Only fruit is either pineapple or strawberries. The only real difference to my usual diet is probably removing dairy and wheat.I'm starting to have doubts as I've felt really bloated and wondered about the gluten free bread, had a gluten free pizza tonight with vegan cheese, it wasn't even that nice but noim in agony all bloated with wind pains.

Did you notice a difference quickly with the low fodmap diet?

2littlecats profile image
2littlecats in reply to SKWEKER

I noticed a difference pretty quickly maybe after about 5 days but around 2 -3 weeks for the full benefit. Did you just use passata for the pizza sauce? I have been eating gluten free bread and feel better for it

SKWEKER profile image
SKWEKER in reply to 2littlecats

It was in pizza express, so I'm not sure. I've been OK on tesco gluten free white bread, but I had sainsburys one for a few days, I need to cross check the ingredients! It's hard to think of something else that's easy for lunch other than bread! I'd read sourdough was good but it's hard to find a proper one.

Any hints and tips would be much appreciated, so desperate for this to work x

There would probably be onion and garlic in pizza sauce. I am the same, struggling with meals!

SKWEKER profile image
SKWEKER in reply to 2littlecats

I had asked for it without onion or garlic but who knows! I shouldn't have risked eating out, good luck with the reintroduction phase x
