Bowell prolapse

Has anyone had an operation for a prolapse bowell. If so please could you tell me about your experience. I particularly want to know if you recovered quickly. Also l have been told that l will need a catheter after the operation. Has anyone had experience of this. Please could you let me know. I am due to have the operation in the next few months. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a bowel and bladder repair operation on October 3rd last year. I had a catheter for a week after I came out of hospital because my bladder wasn’t emptying properly at first. They measure your urine output to check if you can have the catheter removed before you go home. I was surprised how quickly I recovered after the operation and am so glad I had it done. I was having pelvic pain and difficulty bending. Also lots of toiletting issues.

A little uncomfortable when it’s put in and taken out, but not painful. It’s just a means to an end really and nothing to be worried about.

I am having an X-ray next month to determine if I have a prolapse. Did you have this done where they insert a substance in the rear end and X-ray on a toilet.

Yes l did. Also l had the x ray.

Was the X-ray painful and can I ask what symptoms you had before the operation. I was diagnosed with IBS nearly 20 years ago. Gradually got worse with constipation. Suddenly hospital doctor suggests I might have prolapse. All tests prior and cameras with other gastro consultants never mentioned this. Gave birth when I was 21 and I am 68 now and doctor said weak pelvic floor over the years could cause prolapse.

No the x ray wasn’t painful. I haven’t had the operation yet. I have prolapse bowell. The tests will show if you do have a prolapse. I am having the operation with the NHS as l have a referral from a Doctor.

I had the substance in the rear and an X-ray on "toilet". This wasn't painful. I also had a colonoscopy a few weeks prior to this.

I had a rectal prolapse operation over 10 years ago. It was done as keyhole surgery. I had a bladder catheter but it was removed the following day. I was told I would be in hospital for 24 - 48 hours, but they kept me in for an extra day as I was still a bit groggy and there was no one at home. I was fully recovered in 6 weeks. I took the recommended pain relief, but didn't need the strong ones. It was uncomfortable, but not painful.

What symptoms did you have to suspect prolapse please

I had to push everything back in after a bowel movement.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t have a prolapse as l do not have to push it back in. My prolapse is a less severe one.

Iv not had this operation, but have had others. They put the catheter in while your still under, so will wake up with it already in, so you don't have to get up for the loo. I was not aware of it at all. When the nurse took it out it did not hurt. A bit uncomfortable but took just seconds. The catheter is the least of your worrys.

I had a prolapsed rectum operation 10 years ago but was cut across my stomach. I was in Hospital 4 days and the catheter was no problem. I fully recovered and glad I had it done as the prolapse used to throb. Good luck x

I have prolapses of the bowel. Some recommend an op and some don't. There are lots of different types of operations .

I'm sorry to say they are not very successful.

You wouldn't think it rare with the amount of people suffering.

I did - but over 20 years ago! At that time - a relatively slow recovery, but well worth it! I’m sure medicine will be more advanced now! Do ask me if you’ve more questions
