Hi Jem-ells and welcome to our community. I have read somewhere that it is possible. When you quit, your metabolism drops by about 10% so if you reduced your intake by the same amount then I suppose that technically you won't gain any weight. The reality is that you will get cravings and the way that most people can satisfy those cravings is by eating something - usually something that is a bit naughty like cakes or pies or nuts or crisps - get the drift? :)

The thing to do is quit the cigs first then when you're feeling more in control with it you can then concentrate with getting rid of the excess weight. :)

Good luck with your quit and come and join us on the chat (even before you do it) so you can share your journey with everybody.

Andi :)

Just read your profile and I'm sorry you've got some on-going problems. It's brilliant that you've managed to lose so much weight already but you don't need to put too much back on. I think the health benefits of quitting far outweigh the gaining of a few extra pounds and as you've done so well so far with losing weight I don't think you'd have too much trouble picking up again in a few months.

If you want lots of help, we'll all be here for you - I'm now 8 months quit and there's no way I'd have done it if I hadn't found this site first.

Go on then, I dare you to take the plunge! :)

Have you discussed it with your doctor? Also I was wondering, do you do any exercise cos that's supposed to be really good for reducing a lot of weight-related problems. There's another community called Couch to 5K which is very inspirational - might be worth a look at. :)

Hi Jem-ells welcome to our community. Andi is right, people usually put some weight on in the beginning through snacking on all the wrong food, you could try having fruit and chopped veg like carrots to munch on instead but i wouldn't worry to much about it casue stopping smoking is the best thing you can do for your health, so concentrate on that first.

good luck with your non smoking journey, hope to see you on the daily chat sometime :)

Hi Jem..this is my worry :) and if i'm truthful the reason I have so far been unsuccessful at Quit. I agree with the others and think we need to employ the healthy nibbles a lot and the naughty ones just a wee bit :) I am going for quit on 13/03/13 and hope by then to have solidified my healthy nibbles and coping plan.

Well done on your journey so far and good luck for the rest of it

Jan :)

I haven't lost any weight in total all year, I lost about 7lb just before stopping smoking and quickly put it back on as I did drink a lot of tea and ate too many chocolate biscuits. However on a positive note, once I'd stopped smoking I some how felt a little taller, my self esteem seemed so much better and I felt happier with myself. I have started taking better care of myself and enjoy having cleaner teeth, nice smelling clothes and hair etc. The last 10 months have flown by being a non smoker and I will now try and tackle the weight issue.

I ended up at the end of the year just being 2 and a half pound up from last January, which is rubbish if I was on a diet, but fantastic to think I'd stopped smoking and maintained my weight.

So don't worry about a small gain, and try and treat yourself in other ways, like a new lipstick, a nice magazine and feet up with a coffee.

I've been thin in the past but I can honestly say I'm happier being a non smoker, I just feel so much healthier inside and out.

Good luck with your journey and we are all here to listen and help :)

Hi jem-ells,

welcome to our online stop smoking community. As you have already found, our members offer some brilliant advice and support between eachother :-) There will always

As Andi has already said, the benefits of stopping smoking far outweigh any excess weight gained. However, we all understand that for each individual it may feel a different story and that a couple of pounds gained may (in our minds) feel like a couple of stone. It really is important that you get your head around what means more to you though. Wonder has mentioned about feeling healthier inside and out, this is so true.

The confidence that is also gained through stopping smoking will help you move onto the next part of your journey once you are ready. It sounds as though you have made a few positive changes in your life already - new job, decision to stop smoking etc.

Small steps at a time and you'll get to where you want to be :-)

If you have made the decision to quit today, let us know how it is for you and we'll roll with that. If not, then let us help you plan towards a quit date and with everything in place then you'll be ready to go :D

Just remember, no matter how tough it gets, it will get easier and it will most definitely be worth it :D
