hi I am new to this group so hope I do okay. I woke up one sat. morning and in my sleep I lost the use of one leg and my hand I got an ambulance and spent the next 12 days in a stroke unit. I had tia's and luckily no permanent paralysis or speech troubles. The Drs. told me that I had to give up cigs forever if I didn't want another very devastating stroke. Thus, on went the patch, that was 2 and a half months ago and I am doing well but sometimes I feel very short of breath and because I had smoked a long time I struggle but have not gone near any cigs. I wonder if anyone out there may have had a similar experience. That was a very tough and abrupt way to give up smoking but I am grateful that I am as good as I am for all that has happened. Very scared and that is what is keeping me smoke free now. I try to get out walking more and try to keep a good attitude and I am praying that I don't have emphesema or anything like that.

Thanks for your encouraging words they mean a lot to me and at this stage of the game I feel that I can never smoke ever again. It was quite traumatic for me and now I hope that somehow I can reach out to others to share my story and hopefully prevent someone else from going through. I am trying to figure out how to use this site and I appreciate being able to contact others and hear their stories. By the way I had my last cig on July 27, 2019 so as u can see, I am hanging in there!!! God Bless!!!
Hi scaredy and welcome to Quit Support.
Sorry to hear you’ve had such a traumatic experience but good to hear you’re recovering.
Over 2 months smoke free is great and although it’s very difficult, you have done amazingly well on your own👍
This terrific community makes a big difference and you’ll find lots of lovely people here to encourage you on your quit journey.
I’m pretty sure you will inspire others too.
Take care and NOPE🚭✅xx
Thanks so much for the encouraging words I appreciate it. Yes sometimes it is very hard but I will continue my struggle and it feels great to know that I have done well on the patch and I do not ever plan to go back. The price is too high now. Just the thought of having another stroke frightens me. That will keep me from lighting up again. I so enjoy this site and hearing from others who are in similar situations. Have a great evening and take care.
