Quitting smoking can be tough… like really really tough. But positive thinking can make your quit a whole lot easier. By changing the way you think can in effect change your outlook on life and smoking. So when you’re having an especially hard time dealing with withdrawal symptoms or avoiding a smoke, here are seven ways for staying positive in your quit!
STOP hoping and start believing that you can stay quit. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of staying positive in your quit is believing that you can resist cigarettes… for the rest of your life. It’s not just something you hope you can accomplish, but you have trust in yourself that this is something you can and will do! And sure, nothing is even certain, but sometimes you just have to fake it till you make it.
Take pride in the small victories. Been smoke free for a day? Conquered a really bad craving after your afternoon coffee? Made it through a night of barhopping without a smoke? AWESOME. Celebrate these accomplishments, no matter how small or big they may be. These small victories will soon turn into a giant victory over smoking.
Treat yo’ self! Racking up those small victories? It’s now time to reward yourself! Go out to a nice dinner, get a massage, or throw on some Kenny G while in the bath. Thank yourself for doing such a great job with your quit and keep it up.
Reflect on the benefits of going smoke free. There are a million of reasons why quitting smoking is going to improve your life. Here are our top five reasons. Figure out your most important reasons and write them down. Then go back to this list when you’re having a rough time and think about all the positive results of your quit.
Visualize yourself in 10 years as a successful ex-smoker. Go ahead, close those eyes and imagine yourself in the future. You’ve quit smoking for many years now and your life has significantly improved in countless ways. You’ve cut your risk of smoking-related illnesses and diseases and improved the quality and length of your life. You are a warrior for having defeated smoking!
Get your oms on. Meditation and mindfulness practices can not only help you in staying positive in your quit, but research has shown that a wealth of health benefits can come with them as well. Tack on all the health benefits from quitting smoking and your body will thank you.
Don’t beat yourself up on a slip. Most people take a few times before they can quit for good. So if you slip up, don’t get discouraged and get back to being smoke free. View that moment of weakness as a learning experience and prepare yourself even better for your next quit by beating smoking triggers.
