Hi,

Just signed up, I've wanted to quit for a while and am ready to do it. Wondering what is the best way or best NRT and looking for any advice.

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

I'm personally finding a vape stick incredibly useful - I've already cut the nicotine down to 6mg in the last 3 weeks. Hopefully it'll be 0mg before long. Patches can be useful too although, I found that the higher strength nicotine patch made me feel really sick. I guess you just have to find a method that you're comfortable with and go with the flow! The people on this site are incredible - there's lots of good advice and plenty of encouragement and if you slip up (like I did on holiday), they welcome you back with open arms. Good luck with your journey, and remember, we're all here for you. Feel free to rant and rave if the withdrawal gets too much- it WILL pass with time. xxx

Hi Andrew7, a big warm welcome to our lovely quit support community :)

Andrew, you've come to the right place cos there's loads of advice and support on here :) If you have a read through the posts you will see we all try to help each other :) and we have all been where you are now at the planning stage :)

I have bumped a couple of posts up for you, Quit plan and Which NRT :o Have a read through them :)

Andrew, I strongly recommend that you make a quit smoking plan, cos this will help you in the early days but could well help later too :)

NRT :o this really has to be your own choice :) but maybe I would try the patches and perhaps the mouth spray for those hard times :) But if you think you need something for the hand-to-mouth habit, then try the inhalator or an e-cig :)

If your GP or say your local Chemist has a quit smoking cessation in place, then you could perhaps join one of those, cos then you would get extra help, PLUS, you would get the NRT products for the price of a prescription, which is a good saving :)

Andrew, if you have a look to the right of your post, you will see ''Pinned Posts & Topics'' have a look through them :)

Please feel free to come on here for a chat or if you not sure about anything, then please just ask :)

Hope to see you soon, Pete :)

Hiya Andrew and welcome to Quit Support😊

Well done on making the decision to quit, it really is the best thing you can do👍🏼

I see you've had some great advice already and I would suggest you start cutting down in preparation for your quit. This helped me realise I could go longer and longer without lighting up and gradually got down to one in the morning and one in the evening. After that it was a leap of faith and with the help of this fabulous quit family, you can do it too.

Whichever way you decide to quit, we are here for you and will help you every step of the way. Good luck🍀😊x

Thanks for your replies and advice, everyone seems so friendly and supportive on here. I think it's great to a place like this to visit and help each other. I will prob be on here loads moaning!

Thanks for thoughts on NRT I have got a pre pay prescription card so could get some "free" on that. I will need patches, have tried the inhalator before which didn't work for me. I am thinking maybe the chewing gum is worth a try. I think you can get more than one thing on prescription.

I'm not sure how to do a quit plan I'll have a look through the advice.

I am going to set my quit date for Monday and go to local chemist to get the NRT maybe tomorrow.

Thanks for all your advice and encouragement it won't feel like I'm doing it alone xxx

Hi Andrew, welcome to the group.

Have you read Alen Carr's 'easy way to quit smoking'

Highly recommended. That's all I used........ That and a lot of willpower and support from these great folk on here.

If you want to quit, you can do it mate......

Great to hear you're quitting

Hi Paul,

Yes I read the Alan Carr book years ago and it did nothing! Like I was immune to it. I think I'll have to rely on willpower, determination, NRT and good support.

I agree if you want it you can do it.

Congratulations on being 5 months I will feel proud when I get to that stage

Hi Andrew and welcome 😊

I quit using patches. I smoked between 10-15 a day so went for the second stage and 16hours patch as the 24hr was too strong. So depending how many you smoke will help you decide what you go for. If you do patches then make sure you put it on a different part and side of your body each day. I also used to take it off about 30 mins before I went to bed, this helped me sleep. My dreams were more vivid and weirder than normal, but this is a small price to pay to stop having 4000+ deadly toxins in my body....😊

Top tip: always carry a spare patch in your wallet in case yours comes off....or as I often found, I kept forgetting to put one on😊😊

I too had the gum as a back up but found it disgusting so only used it a couple of times....but I still carried it with me just in case 😊

From Monday start saving the cash you would have spent. maybe in your plan you could write down what you are going to treat yourself to at various milestones.... 1 week/each month/year...😊😊 some on here have bought a car/holidays/gym membership/kitchen.... The world is your lobster😊

Good luck for Monday and we will be routing for you 😊😊
