Humming to sudden deafness in left ear

Last week I mentioned that I’m hearing a humming noise in my left ear...three days ago I couldn’t hear anything but a terrible echo

Yesterday I did a hearing test and the ent doctor advised I take 60mg of prednisone for a week, after that another hearing test...then by day 8 reduce to 50mg, each day to reduce by 10mg.

If there is no change I’m to stop the prednisone ( cold turkey) and I will have a procedure to inject cortisone directly into my ear. 😫

If there is an improvement with my hearing, then I will continue with the prednisone and ASAP an MRI will be carried out...to check that there isn’t a benign

Tumour ...

I’m so disappointed 😔,as I have managed to reduce to 5mg after 16 months going by the book without too many hickups..

On the 29/10/2019 I was supposed to do the blood test to see if my adrenaline glands are functioning ..

again. What a disappointment but I will cope. Worse things happen at sea. 👍

This is to try to reverse what is called sudden sensorineural hearing loss (think that is right!). In German it is commonly called a "Hearing crash".

A short course of high dose pred used quickly can reverse the hearing loss. It won't make any difference to your PMR tapering - and you won't have been on it long enough to make any difference to your adrenal function status, whatever it is currently. And if it works - better than being deaf. Though there probably isn't a lot of point having the synacthen test done until this is done and dusted.

Can you re-read that paper on 8th Cranial nerve (the outcome of ;Your Ears) . I can't get at mine, but I think the sudden loss can be one of the symptoms. Thank you in advance.

I think you are right - and the sensiwhatsit I mentioned should be a differential dx.

After reading about the cranial nerve, I have a strong suspicion that there may be some involvement..thanks for the advice.

The Doctor asked me to walk a straight line by placing one foot in front of the other. Two steps and I was swaying all over the place I just couldn’t continue ..lucky the police didn’t ask me to do the same. 😂

That’s probably why he is insisting on mri ASAP.

I’ll just have to wait and see what happens next week.

I wonder if anyone else who posts here has had the same problem ?

Off to bed now to have an early night.

Yes, I also have seen changes in both ears just before I was hit with Giant Cell Arteritis. I now wear two hearing aids. I think my hearing is changing again, but I cannot go in because of the spike in Covid. I guess all I can do is call. Take care Yulik, stay safe.

~You are a great comforter PMRpro - excellent explanation to help Yulik understand what the prob could possibly be.

Blessings as always to you ~ :) :) :)

Oh YuliK

That’s a bit of a blow, to say the least. Lots of Pred will have you jumping around, so don’t forget that.

Have you booked your hearing test so you know when to start the extra Pred? After that test book the next test after working out the days as you don’t want to be left waiting for an appointment while you’re reducing.

Keep in touch, thinking about you 🌷🌷🌷

Good morning to both PMRpro and mrs nails

Thanks girls for the reassurance regarding short term prednisone and further appointments🙏

Seven days from today the hearing test.

They are going to phone me to confirm.

Yes it certainly was a blow , but I will get through it. After PMR this is just a set back.

I was always worried about GCA so I suppose I should count myself lucky.

Feel well and bless. 🌹🌹🌹

So sorry to read your news.

Hopefully , as Pro says this will be reversed quickly without too much effect on your tapering and you can get back on a smooth course again.

Keep you chin up and let us know what happens.

Oh YuliK...that must feel like a set back. I have every reason to hope the temporary increase and tapering of prednisolone will do the trick. Take one step at a time. It is most reassuring to see that the professionals are proactive in finding out the cause of your discomfort.

Please keep us posted as to how the increase in pred helps. X

How are you feeling today YuliK?
