. Woke up this morning with diarrhoea runs..

I have been on 20 mg for a week (30) mg last week. No problems. Woke up this morning with the runs. Read sick day rule so took an extra 5mg.I checked my blood pressure which is up a bit. 150/85.

What else should I do and how long do I wait for it to get better.

It's scary when you are on your own

Was it just the one episode or are you having repeat visits? The main thing is keeping up the fluids. If you don’t feel nauseated (you didn’t mention you were) that’s a good thing. Depends what the cause is as to how long it goes on. Any other symptoms?

Three consecutive episodes so far. Just a few minutes apart. I don't feel sick. No other symptoms just feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for your quick reply.

Crampy and painful or just urgency?

Crampy then need to go. Bit crampy. Quiet at the moment.

See how you go, it’s early yet. See if it settles over the next few hours. It is good you are feeling otherwise ok. If it were me, I’d have a nibble of something that seems right just so I don’t get hit by low blood sugar as well. Even if it is just a sweet. Keep an eye out for blood or darkening poop, increasing pain, feeling unwell. Hopefully once the pipes are clear the body will let up a bit. Have you started any new medication?

Of course it is the weekend when these things happen, but you have 111 at your disposal if it worsens or you are worried. Let us know how you go.

Thank you so much Snazzy. I have not taken immodium thought it better to get rid. I will have some toast in a minute and just rest up a bit longer on my bed. I am really careful about what I eat. Thank you so much

Might be worth it, but get things settled first, and maybe just sip water for next couple of hours .. won’t add to excellent advice already given by SnazzyD

Yes, hold off on the Imodium because you don’t know what this is and I’d ask medical advice first. Doesn’t sound that there is a need; it’s not like it’s plain travellers trots and you have a 4 hour bus trip to get through!

Thank you Snazzy. I have had my toast with a little marmalade. What would we do without you allxxx

Would agree, hold off the Imodium.. I’ve used it in the past occasionally - and it had the ‘binding’ effect for the following 5 days. Talk about one extreme to the other😳

Snazzy asked if you were on any other medications - are you? Not only any new ones, some can take a while to show their true colours.

Clarinet1234 in reply toPMRpro

Not on any other apart from omeprazole and the calcium chews. Had a slice of toast for breakfast and some rice for lunch (plain). Tummy quiet since this morning. X

Both of them can lead to upset guts but if it settles it could just have been something you ate.

Thank you. I won't take the calcium carbonate one for a couple of days. Need the omeprazole one which has not caused any problems.Feeling tired but will have more rice later.

I don't suppose it's got anything to do with coming down from 30mg to 20 mg a week ago. I stay on that dose for the next 3 weeks.

The support I get from you all is keeping me sane. Thank you.

It shouldn't be causing adrenal issues at that level but your body may be protesting at the change in dose - though I would have thought it would be more likely to happen at the time, not a week later.

So hope you are feeling much better now. Omeprazole can turn on one! It gave me such pain and diarrhoea after several months of behaving innocently that I thought I would have to go to A&E, so it might be worth talking to your GP about an alternative.

Clarinet1234 profile image
Clarinet1234 in reply toblackkit

Thank you for that. Tummy has settled now thank goodness. I will take your advice. What alternatives were you offered

blackkit profile image
blackkit in reply toblackkit

In the end I decided to do without anything (especially as the long term effects of omeprazole are a bit worrying), but always eat Greek yoghurt before swallowing my pred, and that seems to be working well. You may need a stomach protector for other reasons, in which case esomeprazole or lansoprazole could be suitable alternatives, although they are in the same group as omeprazole. Cimetidine and famotidine are a completely different type and might be better. Lots of good luck.
