Right oblique and pelvic pain

I have been having severe burning and swelling in my right oblique muscle and it radiates to my pelvis for 19 months. I awoke one Sunday morning with this pain. I have had umpteen tests but nothing is showing up except swollen ureters. My right oblique/front flank burns and is hard and swollen.

Has anyone else had these symptoms as I'm very sad with the pain.

Hi, it sounds like a neuropathy to me. I have similar symptoms affecting the pelvis and lower abdomen muscles. I got my diagnosis from a neurologist. After pelvic surgery, I developed these symptoms which are due to some damage to the nerves passing those areas. I suggest you see a neurologist. Have you told your GP yet?

I have seeked advice from my GP. Had quite a few investigations. Nothing showing up yet but have swollen ureters. Due to see a urologist soon. It's just I have swelling where my pain is. Did the neurologist advise you on pain relief or meds at all?

Thank you for your reply. It's a very debilitating condition and my heart goes out to you.

GPs are useless. I got the diagnosis after 3 years and only because I decided to see the neurologist privately (gp would not refer me).I am taking nortriptyline and gabapentin but I will need to have nerve block injections too. They are the best diagnostic tools and pain management treatments. If they work, I will also have a more long term solution, pulsed radiofrequency.

Wow- that all sounds amazing. My GP put me on amitriptyline which does nothing. I have heard about the nerve injections. I am thinking of going private too. Your advice has REALLY helped me. Is the garbapentine and nortriptyline effective? I have heard Pregabalin quite good too.

It's so good to reach out and know what we are going through. I'm going to ask my GP for different pain relief.

Did the neurologist advise on your meds?

I do find swimming helps.

Yes, the neurologist did. Gabapentin and nortriptyline help a bit, but it is not the ideal solution, as the neurologist said. Are you based in London? If so, I recommend Dr. K. Moodley from St. George's Hospital (neurologist), and their pain management clinic.

Thank you. Does your pain go into your back flank sometimes?

Yes, it does. My right flank feels "shorter" due to the tightness of all the muscles innervated by the affected nerve 😭

I know EXACTLY that feeling. Isn't it awful. Just been for a walk and my whole right side feels stretched and strained. 😫 I had a very active job for 13 years in the NHS and I'm sure I have over done it. Yet the NHS can't seem to find an answer so far. Xx I really feel for you. I hope this doesn't get worse for us.

I know! You'll be fine, just go and see a good neurologist and a pain management specialist at the hospital. How did you injure yourself? Did you strain the muscle? Or did you have pelvic surgery?

I didn't have pelvic surgery. I think over the years I lifted too much and wrecked my abdominal muscles. When I awoke with the damage done after a busy physical week I could hardly walk and I was convinced it was appendix. I also thought it would get better in time but it's been there ever since. How about you?

Have you been evaluated for an internal hernia? No one could find anything until tge finally did a stand up MRI!

Do you feel better when you lay down (hernia may reduce)? Do you feel better floating in a pool (hernia refuces due to outside water pressure)?

Seems odd your ureters are swollen?!? Have you seen a urologist?

Best of luck!

Yes the pain is better when lying down and swimming does help. I am seeing a urologist soon.

Thank you for the advice. Have you heard of a spigelian hernia?

Sounds like a hernia to me... but I am not a doctor. My hernia reduced when I laid down or was floating in water (pressure).

My hernia was internal (no visible budge) as it was in the obturator foramen. (It was a complication 20 years after a hysterectomy.)Hoping the urologist finds a cause. If not, try a hernia specialist?

Yes, I have heard of that hernia. Any budge palpable?

Good luck. It is so hard to be patient with seeing all the specialists...
