My B12 and folate. BetterYou Pure Energy B12

Hi all got bloods back folate is low again so back on 5mg folic acid, my b12 is still around 300s but it recently dropped by 20. So I got the BetterYou Pure Energy B12 spray to see if this helps with that as my GP thinks my b12 is fine. I want it above 500 as I have have thyroid issues and it recommends to have b12 in upper ranges.

Question is has anyone here used the BetterYou Pure Energy B12 spray and if it benefit them and how long it took to feel and the effect of it?

I vooxxy I have used the spray for at least two years between two and four sprays a day and it has I think benefitted me.

You cannot overdose on B12 as any excess is excreted via your urine.

Keep your Folate levels up by eating leafy green vegetables as this and B12 will help make red blood cells.

I am not medically trained and wish you well.

I've used the spray to tide me over until my next injection and it seems to do a good job. Notice it within few days of using

vooxxy, confused about second half of first sentence -

do you mean that your B12 has dropped to 200 rather than 20 (which I think would actually be off the bottom of the measurable scale for serum B12)?

Having your B12 drip by 20 is nothing to worry about. The assay they use isn't at all accurate. You could measure the same sample, containing 250 pmol/L, twice and get values of 200 and 300 pmol/L.

The idea that B12 needs to be above 500 is a myth promulgated by those on the thyroid forum. Blood levels of B12 are irrelevant (which is why experts recommend no testing once treatment has commenced). Whether your B12 treatment minimises symptoms or not is relevant.

The B12 spray might help, depending on the cause of your deficiency. It does nothing at all for me.

Well there is evidence I saw somewhere cant find the link to show that people with no thyroid gland cannot absorb b12 correctly.

fbirder in reply tovooxxy

Even if that were so, why would inefficient absorption require B12 levels to be sky high?

Im not saying I want my levels to be sky high though fbirder...I would like them to be in the 500 range just to have peace of mind. I'am trying everything to see if will help relieve my symptoms fbirder and in the full blood works that I got done I'am low in folate as it came way back down again even when i do eat foods with folic acid as well as "low" b12.

500 is 'sky high'. It is higher than about 85% of normal people. But, if you want them to be sky high then try taking some high-dose oral B12.

Hi fbirder, interested in your comment that blood levels of B12 are irrelevant ?

fbirder profile image
fbirder in reply toQUE6T-33

Because people can continue to have symptoms with very high blood levels of B12. Nobody knows why.

If this was the case why would the nhs waste money on the basic blood b12 test?

fbirder in reply tovooxxy

Because most people with a deficiency do have low B12.

Sensible labs will have three classifications for B12 results - low, intermediate, and normal.

Here is how one NHS Trust tests and treats B12 and/or folate... hey.nhs.uk/wp/wp-content/up...

Ah, thanks for explaining. I don't have PAS, but noted this discussion. I do

tend to have high in range or above range B12 Serem & found it of interest. My guess is B12 isn't being used at cellular level as it should be.

I do tend to have the active B12 level tested. I'm right in thinking Folic Acid should be within range though ?

As mentioned elsewhere - if your B12 isn't being used at a cellular level then you will have high MMA and hCys. You can get MMA tested privately.

The Active B12 test will only tell you how much B12 you have that can enter the cell. The MMA test will tell you if it is entering the cell and is doing what it's supposed to be doing.

Yes, folate should be in range. 400 mcg of folic acid and/or a diet rich in leafy green veg, nuts, seeds and pulses will sort that.
