Blood Results can anyone help?

Hi Everyone,

I've had a lot of Neuro symptoms and generally been unwell for 9 months I've had several blood tests only one on NHS but privately I've been tested for Vitamin deficiency and Thyoid issues. I have allergic rhinitis which just wont shift no matter what I do and I've recently gone back and been taking a look at bloods for clues as to what could be going on in my body. I feel foggy most of the time and my brain really feels like it's misfiring as much as my body. My heart rate is all over the place and I don't sleep well and I have constant aches around my body. I've lost a lot of internal sensation and my body just generally isn't working / digesting food.

I quit Booze & Caffeine in Jan and Feb, I don't smoke, I eat healthily but have recently gone Gluten free in a bid to find out what is causing my allergic reaction in my nose. I'm waiting on results from some Allergy bloods for foods and inhalants but i'm starting to think it's just another symptom of something wrong in my body.

I noticed my fingernails are vertically ridged and don't have any moons, I read this is a good indicator of decency but I'm not sure if it's held as a proper identifier?

Anywho I've been told my bloods are all normal on all occasions but would like some feedback to see if there's anything however small especially in my B12/ Thyroid which could indicate what is happening to me.

Any help / ideas would be appreciative massively even if it's just putting my mind at rest as my GPs have been rude and unhelpful at best. Ranges I've taken from the results sheets.

Worth noting at the time the Magnesium was done I had been taking tablets for 3 months until a month previous.

I had also been taking Floradix for 3 months until a month previous

do you supplement at all?

active B12 is well in range, folate looks good - though would be useful to have the units and ranges of the results above

- no sings of any anaemia in the blood work

Basically, nothing in the above to point to B12 or folate deficiency deficiency as the cause of your symptoms. They would also appear to rule out diabetes.

Suggest you post on TUK forum in respect of thyroid results.

Ranges in brackets. Thanks a lot for taking a look it puts my mind at rest in some ways. I will post in the Thyroid group though just to be sure. I guess the search will continue as to the cause of my issues.

magnesium appears to be above range, just - not sure what that might do.

Yes the doc didn't seem too phased about that.

I had been taking Magnesium tablets for a few months in a bid to help my sleep and spasms but stopped taking that and Omega three about a month before I got tested as I started getting brain zaps and heavy depression. I just thought my god I don't know whats causing what anymore so I just cut out all the supplements apart from Turmeric. I haven't had that feeling since. I suspect it was the Omega three as I was previously unable to take evening primrose for my period pain as it made me feel worse.

To add a little to Gambits reply, it can take quite some time after going gf for any difference to be felt, and many people, myself included, have found milk to be the culprit where rhinitis is concerned.

Ps. If you want a confirmed diagnosis of coeliac you do need to be still eating glutened foods.

Thank you!

I was pondering if it's milk or eggs as I have them both a lot, hopefully the results will tell me either way.

I'm only 2 weeks in GF I was going to give it a month and see if anything improves but would you suggest longer?

Thanks again for your advice

It could be either milk, eggs or something completely different. Hopefully your tests will give you a definitive answer.

For me cutting dairy was almost instant cure. Try seeing if it is worse after you have had a large milky drink. I used to get tummy ache and a snuffy nose within a short space of time. I also find i sleep better in a cool enviroment rather than having the heating on.

Hi,

Have you had a test for ferritin or other iron tests?

labtestsonline.org.uk/under...

Good luck with finding answers.

It is possible to show signs of b12 deficiency even if B12 levels are normal range in some cases. Some people have functional B12 deficiency, where there is plenty of B12 in blood but it's not getting into cells .

Martyn Hooper is the chair of PAS (Pernicious Anaemia Society). Book is up to date with UK B12 guidelines.

"Living with Pernicious Anaemia and Vitamin B12 Deficiency" by Martyn Hooper

Has several case studies.

"Could it Be B12; An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses" by Sally Pacholok and JJ. Stuart (USA authors)

Very comprehensive book about B12 deficiency with lots of case studies.

I know your private test shows a within range result for Active B12. Were you taking any supplements containing b12 prior to this test as this might have affected result? Just noticed you mentioned a liquid vitamin supplement which contains B12.

Have NHS tested your serum B12?

b12deficiency.info/b12-test...

UK B12 guidelines emphasise the importance of treating patients who are symptomatic for B12 deficiency even if B12 results are within range.

I was highly symptomatic for many years and most of my serum B12 results were 300 -400 ng which was well within range for serum B12.

I am not medically trained.

Thank you for all this material it's very helpful. I haven't had proper Iron panel done just whatever is taken care of in a standard NHS Full Blood Count.

What test would you suggest could give me an idea if I'm not absorbing or using B12 properly? I've had just had the private Active and Folate tests? I know you aren't medically trained but if im paying for something I wanna go for whatever would be the most reliable.

I don't know why but something is drawing me back to the B12 thing even though my ranges are fine on the test I had. I was taking the Floradix for a few months daily until roughly a month before my test. I thought I had a virus so my friend suggested it. I thought it made me feel slightly better but I don't know.

Is there any truth in the finger nail thing with the ridges and no moons?

Thanks again for all your info x

I also want to know what cause nail ridges and lack of moons on nails.

I have had 16 b12 injections over the last 4 1/2 months with no improvement in either of these 2 symptoms and im only 46. Improvement in many others.

I understand the ridges might be a sign of malnutrition and i was treated for h pylori at the end of August....so 6 weeks ago but the ridges continue to keep coming just as many as always and i still dont feel right.

And im taking so many suppliments, in an effort to overcome an absorbtion/deficit issue, im tired of them.

Hi,

From my personal experience , I did have a few ridges on thumbnails which disappeared after starting b12 and my nail growth improved and the moons on several of my fingernails became more visible.
