Tomorrow after being in moderate to severe pain since Easter Monday and enduring 3 courses of antibiotics have an appt at Dental Hub but am sooo nervous my stomach keeps flipping over and feel quite sick with anxiety. Has anyone had abscess treatment in a Hub? ..they said they will do x-rays first but was asked on the dentist phone triage, if i have considered extraction(s) i do have 2 other teeth that need attention and that would have been done in March but now my mouth feels so nasty have had sooo much pain have felt insane..I understand that they feel its safer and quicker to do extractions but don't want to be pressurised into these...

Hi Bea61,

If you get a tooth extracted, it will have long term repercussions for your dental health and comfort. There will be a hole left, and unless you get a dental implant, the surrounding teeth will all move to fill the space. This results in your top and bottom teeth no longer being in alignment, leading to possible TMJ problems, grinding your teeth, enamel loss...

If you have a root canal done, the original structure is preserved. A much better idea.

A good dentist can do this procedure with no pain at all.

By the way, if you have any whole cloves, placing one next to the affected area will help reduce the pain. Cloves contain the same medicine a dentist places on your tooth to calm the nerve when he does a filling (eugenol).

Hi Bea. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. I've been in this type of situation, spending the evening of Christmas day at the hospital because of an infected tooth. And guess what, it was a tooth with a root canal done to it. Just to show you that nothing is ever guaranteed with teeth, bad or good for that matter. If you ask anyone, we all have had issues with our teeth at some stage. Your decision on what you do will depend on you having an open conversation with the practitioner you see and probably, where your tooth actually is situated in your mouth. That makes a huge difference. Nobody can force you either way.

Teeth issue is not nice, to say the least but you will get better soon, whatever you decide. But yes, you still have a little way to go. And for the future, as you probably know, good brushing, flossing, using the interdental brush and avoiding sugar as much as possible. It actually does work!

Take care!

I am also going through this but here in Scotland they only do extractions from this problem at the emergency dentist. If you can hold on till your dentist opens, probably the next phase of coming out of lockdown you will see your dentist and they will possibly do root treatment and may save your tooth.

It is a really frustrating time to be in at the moment with severe dental problems 😕
