constipation

I’ve been in hospital for constipation for 3 days. Doc did enema which helped. Started me on constipation tablets helped but only when I take them. Then problem starts.

doc says I’m blocked up very badly. So I’ll be taking sachets for a very long time. Has anyone else suffered bad constipation and what have they taken? I’ve been given laxido. Don’t even know best way to take them to be honest. Morning or evening. Doc was useless

Hi, I’ve been taking laxido daily for about five years now. I have one sachet usually after supper if I notice my stool becoming firmer I’ll have two sachets every three to four days. I did read in the instructions for severe constipation you can take up to six sachets within a six hour period. Unfortunately I have to live on a liquid diet so don’t get a lot of natural fibre. Obviously it’s better to try and do it naturally but needs must and I’ve never had a problem with it. Good luck. 🤞

hi Xene thanks for your reply. Yes that’s what I’ve been wanting how others take the laxido. Unfortunately it doesn’t help as much for me. But it’s the only thing the docs gave. I take two sachets morning and evening

Do you take them within a six hour period, as morning and evening could be longer than six hours? You could try adding another one or two sachets but if it’s not helping at all go back to your gp as you don’t want another fecal impaction. The trouble with taking a laxative long term is that it can cause a lazy bowel. Maybe try taking two sachets late afternoon and two after supper, we’re all different but I hope you manage to get some relief.

Hi Junny I take Co-codamol and other medication which causes constipation, I also have limited mobility so can be prone to constipation. I’ve found that a bowl of branflakes, a glass of clear apple juice and keeping hydrated works for me. I have not needed to take Laxido in the last 12 months but before discovering what works for me was taking Laxido and an enema occasionally. I feel so much better and have regular bowel movements.

Hope you find something which works for you.

I had severe constipation, including one hospital stay after 2 weeks of impaction, for about 30 years.

Things gradually improved once I changed my diet ie taking a lot of olive oil and natural grains. I had been fine for about 3 years and then started the Zoe diet plan to reduce my blood sugar and cholesterol. My bowels work really well now, and I wish I’d tried it before. Olive oil, lentils, quinoa etc are working wonders.

My son takes 4 sachets a day with his 'breakfast' which he has at lunch time. That allows him to have a bowel movement before he goes to bed at 11pm. He has tried various amounts, and also tried lactulose but that didn't make much difference. He couldn't stomach Fibrogel!

He recently had an appointment with a consultant about it all, and he said yep, you will need to take laxatives for the rest of your life probably, but that's okay, carry on with what works for you.

Hiya

My “poo” as the doc also called it lol is coming a lot now but i know it’s only cos of the laxido. Not hard stool still. It’s coming out watery. I’m wondering when and if it will be normal 🙈

Junny123 profile image
Junny123 in reply tocyberbarn

hi does he take it daily that amount? Are his bowels normal or watery after taking them. Not a great question I know but I need all the help and opinions and experiences!

cyberbarn profile image
cyberbarn in reply toJunny123

My son says he wouldn't say watery, very soft, but not quite watery. He has varied in the past with how many, for a while he had three a day, but then wanted to try four and found that was better. He has his 'breakfast' at lunch time, and takes all four after eating lunch in a very large glass of water. He then has a bowl movement usually around 10pm, sometimes earlier though.

hope that helps.

mine was soft but now just water it seems like. I’m really confused to be honest

cyberbarn profile image
cyberbarn in reply toJunny123

How many are you taking? You might be taking too many sachets. Try one less?

Junny123 profile image
Junny123 in reply tocyberbarn

was told two am and two pm

cyberbarn profile image
cyberbarn in reply toJunny123

You could try one and a half at each time and see if that is a little better?

Laxido isn't like a drug, you can try different amounts of it. As I say, my son takes all four at once, but am and pm is also okay. But if you are very watery, that could be that you are taking too much for you. Everyone is different. Try a little bit less and see what happens.

I’m doing that now. And also taking the senna that the hospital gave. I’ve no idea how long I’m going to be taking this for. I stopped for a day and struggled 😢

cyberbarn profile image
cyberbarn in reply toJunny123

Did the hospital know you were taking the laxido and senna? They are both laxatives and together they might be too much. And it is probably not a good idea to stop taking it for a day, better to just reduce how much you are taking.

What we did when my son had to take more than the four sachets was to reduce it by one sachet for a week, then reduce it another sachet for a week until he got to a level that was working for him. Once you are taking a lot of laxatives it will make you bowel work differently so if you just suddenly stop you will go back to constipation. I hope that makes sense?

I suffer the same as you, I never bothered about it until I needed a colonoscopy and the doctor who was doing it said that it was like trying to get past concrete, I had taken the laxatives as they gave me, he made a new appointment and gave me a different laxatives that I had to take every day for a week, the nurse said I better make sure I was near a toilet all the time as I would need one I took the laxatives as told and returned for a second colonoscopy and I had no change so they gave me more stronger laxatives that I had to take for 7 days and one that was ment to be the strongest there was which I took but still no movement in the end they sent me for a cat scan which came back as OK no problem, in the end it was another 2 weeks before I went but even only going this amount was not a problem since then I found out what was the cause of the way I go is due to the amount of pain meds I have to take as my back is broke in 4 places amongst other things so I am on 5 different pain meds all of the time it was when I missed taking my meds one morning and I went 4 times in one day not that missing meds is a good thing as I was in much more pain than normal. So if you can cope without your pain meds for a day it may be worth it, for me not going that oftern is not a problem all of my life I only went once a week on a Saturday morning and only went for a wee twice a day once as I get up and once when I go to bed which is around 20.00hrs (8.00pm) i normaly am up by 05.00hrs (5.00am).

Good luck finding something that works for you.

the best thing that I have found that works without fail even after surgery when I’ve been blocked up for days is milk of magnesia. It tells you on the bottle how much to take but I used to take a couple of cap fills at bedtime if constipation was really bad and it would have me going like clock work in the morning. Just try to drink lots of extra fluids if you can as this naturally helps to soften the stool and helps get the laxatives to work better. Good luck

I use it in cooking and drizzle it on bread instead of using butter. I used to avoid oil, when I had a dieting fad, and think that messed up my digestive system. Before I gained confidence in using it liberally in food, I used to have a dessert spoonful with breakfast

Haha, I’m with you all the way on getting the dose/amount right. I think my bowel is my enemy and I haven’t even got diverticula etc.🤷‍♀️😂

Junny123 profile image
Junny123 in reply toXene

My enemy too😩. Why do I feel so bloated an full in my actual stomach today. Even taking full breaths is an effort

Xene profile image
Xene in reply toJunny123

I wouldn’t have any idea as to why although I do get stomach pains and a bit bloated sometimes. Are you actually passing stools on a more regular basis now or is it still hit and miss?

Junny123 in reply toDavid_H

hi I don’t know exactly when I’m not constipated that’s the problem - I know that doesn’t make sense. But it’s after the hospital visit they put me on them and said I’ll need to carry on taking them coz my bowel is so badly full. But I just don’t know when it’s gunna be empty!

I'm on 10ml Lactulose twice daily which helps a great deal. My epilepsy medication causes constipation as well as many others.

I have epilepsy too. I’ve never thought of that but it’s popped up quite a few places I’ve read. Which do you take?

Lactulose 3.3g/5ml Oral Solution 500ml bottle - Sandoz... I hope this helps.

And I bet you’ll be feeling fuller than you usually do plus, if you’re like me, doing less snacking! Low fat was never a good idea - wish I’d realised that decades ago

I take prucalopride prescribed at hospital. It works with the whole system to keep you regular. Also half or one sachet of movicol each evening.

Hi Junny, I’m Isobel in the UK. Hope things have now improved for you. I have to take Laxido powder sachets morning and night time. They suit me, I have a bowel prolapse, and I can’t force things. They are gentle for me and I hope for you also.

Best wishes from me xx
