Can you get mouth ulcers when taking methatraxate,my mouth is so sore
Yes!!! And they are horrid so I feel for you as they drove me nuts. I starting developing them several years after starting MTX. Phone your helpline to ask about taking more folic acid, and try using mouthwashes like Eludril as that soothes. Those things worked for a while, but In the end the thing that really helped me was swapping to injectable MTX. The all went away within about 2 weeks, and (touch wood) they haven't returned.
Hi, yes, honey I'm on MTX injections and go through bouts of having them I also have the burning mouth syndrome...it's all horrible..I use corsododyl and when the mouth is on fire I suck an ice cube....I'm sorry to hear you having these side effects...the complaint is bad enough without any added extras..if you decide to use bonjela be prepared to jump through your roof!!! Maryxxx
Taking Folic acid is supposed go help prevent that.
I have suffered with mouth ulcers and cold sores frequently since starting oral mtx 15 mg. I eventually rung my rheumy nurse who suggested another day off folic acid.so now I have my mtx on Mondays and folic acid tues and thur and I am much better. Hope this helps michelle x
I was put on folic acid every day except my mtx Friday and so far have escaped them.
Unfortunately these can be a real problem with MTX. I used Orobase (can be bought over the counter, but also on prescription) which sticks to moist surfaces to protect them. I also found that keeping my mouth squeaky clean helped with the pain - using a mouth wash and cleaning my teeth really carefully. The dentist was very concerned that I had such large ulcers and advised me to change my medication!
Yes, yes, yes ! I'm so sorry. I had terrible mouth sores from Methotrexate pills and yet now I take MTX injections and no mouth sores. It seems crazy. My Dr called into the Pharmacy a liquid mouth rinse to help the sores go away. I think it was called Nystaten. I hope you find the med that will help you the most without side effects.
Take Care !
Hi all, I'm on Hydroxy and am sure MTX will be on the cards in the future....are we able to have the inj straight away, it seems oral meds are not tolerated at all?
Folic acid is the magic treatment and the right level will get that sorted out.
Hi there, I take 5mg folic acid every day apart from MTX day and that pretty much seems to stop the mouth ulcers. My Rheumatologist advised to take it 6 days a week rather than once or twice as it does seem to protect you against ulcers. I very rarely get them now.
