Serving a purpose

I was in bed thinking last night why we smoke. It serves a purpose as dessert after we eat. It’s a stimulant to go to bed and wake up. It’s an entertainment when we are bored. It’s a stress reliever. It’s a social gathering. It’s a reward after a project or a long day. The list can go on. As I think about this list is there really a purpose to all of this? Not really. It’s all smoke and mirrors. I think the real purpose is to serve ourselves. Then I ask myself is this what I want to do ? Smoking serves no purpose.

Right on. No purpose whatsoever...so the only purpose we actually use it for is to satisfy withdrawal symptoms...and then we do this endlessley so that life becomes a monotonous cycle of going through withdrawal/use the drug/short time of peace/craving/withdrawal.

It's a shame because one need not die to be reborn (if one believes in that stuff.) Everyday is a rebirth, a novel chance to become a better person. But the smoker does not give him or herself the chance, or restricts him or herself severley because everyday the lungs get blacker and weaker, everyday the brain is more a slave than it was yeterday, everyday we repeat the same exact thoughts and actions in relation to buying cigs and the way we smoke them, everyday we go through the same cravings which lead to frustration...aswell as the same pleassures (smoking rituals) which eventually also lead to frustration, for the sanctuaries we construct become our prisons.

Hi RoisinO1 hope all is well with

You. I am actually doing great! I have a piece of paper on my dresser that plainly says “serves no purpose “ as a reminder of where I was and where I am at. That was my inspiration (so to speak) for my post. I see it every day and say yep, it sure don’t I have not had a cigarette since that time and feel totally different now 😊

Excellent KathieO - I done the same and printed off one of our Hercu's inspirational quotes about cigarettes and smoking giving us the false sense of euphoria, it really hit a nerve with me and stuck it up on my laptop desk and petition at work and read hundreds of times in the first 6 months of my journey, that is almost 4 years ago now!!
