I stopped smoking yesterday

It's pretty close to 24 hours, so yes, i stopped yesterday. It's funny, i knew yesterday would be my day. I knew that by the amount of cigs i had left in my pack. I just didn't know what time i would actually be stopping at. As it turned out i smoked quite a lot yesterday morning and the big moment nearly passed me by.

You would expect the last cigarette of a 22 year, 20/40 a day addiction would be a big occasion. So did i but i grabbed that last one out of sheer habit, lit it and only after i had smoked half did i think to check the pack to see if there were any others in there. There wasn't. That was the last and i'd already promised myself it would be the last. So i when i put that out i said that was enough.

So far so good. I've found Allen Carr's Easyway to be not so easy. It's diffcult to embrace cravings and enjoy every second of them. The muscles in my face don't really want to make me smile. It's tough, no doubt about it.

But it will not beat me.

I work offshore.. so i have a little advantage in that i'll have no temptations of alcohol until i finish work in 2 weeks time. Hopefully by then i'll be in a better position to deal with things as well. I also called my wife today and told her i'd quit. "I managed a full day without cigarettes!" i said. I'm not sure she believed me but she was supportive anyway. I've known her for 9 years and she used to smoke. I was more than a little jealous when she stopped smoking 5 years ago with what appeared to be very little effort. I was proud of her then and i'm proud of myself now.

It is great to make it into Day 2. :)

Hi James, I am also proud of you and extra impressed that you are going to if only temporarily give up the drink, I like you think it will help you to get through some of the worst bits of your quit.

Your wife was probably shocked and stunned so it wasn’t she didn’t believe you she was amazed when you told her  I think when you return and you are still smoke free she will be absolutely thrilled with you and be as proud as punch.

Keep posting and letting us know how you are doing daily and if you need help shout and we will come running.

Make sure you get plenty of fluids as this will help the detox process and iced water is good for the craves if sipped instead of a cig, take care and well done.

That's past my 36 hour mark now and i'm feeling OK. I've dealt with some pretty heavy cravings up till now, but i've not been tempted to smoke. I've not been tempted to give in.

I do feel a little hard done by though. We work shifts here offshore, 12 hours at a time. However, today is crew change day and i'm to change to the opposite shift. Since the new crew arrived on the rig very late today it means i got less time to sleep as i had to work until they got here.

So the bottom line is that i only had 5 hours off before i had to start another 12 hour shift. Except i couldn't sleep, so i think i managed 2 hours sleep. Normally, this wouldn't be much of an issue for me, i'm used to chopping and changing sleep patterns and can get by on very little sleep.

The thing is... i've never done this while i'm going cold turkey. And only my second day of cold turkey at that. Actually, i've never ever gone cold turkey at all before so this is all new to me. So yes this feels a bit unfair, on my second day of CT i'll be awake for 22 hours enduring the pangs.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. If i can do this... then everything else has to be easy! And not only that... i'll be able to sleep through the best part of day 3 when i finish my shift.

Roll on day 3.

Hi James

If you can make it through a tough time you'll find the next tough time a whole lot easier to deal with. Enjoy your well deserved sleep - when you wake up you'll be nicotine free - how great is that :)

Oh no... i've flipped from feeling OK to feeling absolutely terrible in the space of a few minutes. I'm tired, i'm feeling nauseous, my hands feel numb and my brain feels like it's pushing against the top of my skull.

This is NOT fun. I am hanging on though.

hang on in there James, it will pass. Drink plenty of ice cold water, and breathe deeply until the crave passes. Whatever you do, do not give in :)

I should be fine now. I'm still having some uncomfortable cravings but not as bad as i had earlier on. That felt like i was still on drugs, not detoxing. I'm also finished work now so can sleep anytime i'm able to. After i wake i should be almost half way through Day 3! Yay!

Thanks to everyone who's gave me advice so far. I know it's only been a few small steps but just knowing that people (you guys) who have been through this already are helping me is great encouragement. Thank You.

Hi James, you probably want read this till you wake up later, don’t be surprised if you have not managed a nice long refreshing sleep yet, it’s quite common at the beginning of your quit to have sleep disturbances or weird and wonderful dreams, eventually the body’s own defence system kicks in and the body will again start to produce the hormones it needs to give your mind and body its natural balance back, don’t worry normal service will be resumed eventually :D that’s if you are lucky enough to have any concept of what normal is :D I hope you are getting plenty of water down you as this really does help to flush those bad boy toxins out of you system, also plenty of fruit and veg and possibly a vitamin supplement as well, what we have to remember is that quitting smoking reeks havoc on our immune system as well so if we keep everything topped up it helps to ward off any bugs we don’t want to have to deal with on top of everything else.

Keep posting and reading the threads that others have been good enough to contributed, it can be very helpful at the beginning and lets you know you are not alone, there is always someone on here to give you a little pull along the ever changing Road to smoke free.

Your doing good. Embracing cold turkey was evil for me, thank god for all the wonderful peeps on here to see me through. If i did it you can too and oh yeah, your sleep will be up the creek as will your digestive system oddly enough. loads of water.
