Well, I've been away again because of another injury from falling. As you know, I fell into a bathtub at the beginning of February and broke two ribs---lots of pain and down for 6 weeks. Just as I was recovering from that, I fell again, right into a mesquite bush, and got fill of prickers and even small branches. My left arm was full of puncture wounds and I had a small branch that punctured my right hand. Hubby freed me from the clutches of the mean mesquite, and I went home, poured peroxide over both hands and arms, applied triple antibiotic cream, and bandaged both hands and arms with gauze wrap and ace bandages. Woke up in the middle of the night with right hand throbbing and looking like someone had nuked it, it was so swollen. Went to Urgent Care next day and they advised that I needed to see a hand surgeon immediately. It appears that the branch that punctured my right hand had gone so deep that it splintered one of my bones as well as chipped off a piece. End result us that I had surgery on the hand about a month ago; the dr. debrided the split bone and removed the chip, so I've been without my dominant hand. Still very bruised and swollen and the pain is finally starting to subside, but I still have to be careful not to overuse it because the pain increases dramatically. I'm starting therapy on it tomorrow--I should only need 2=3 visits, which is good because Medicare cut the PT benefit and I need all I can get for the MS. In the interim, between the broken ribs and the broken hand, it has been next to impossible to keep up with my exercise program, I could not go to the therapy pool since I broke the ribs, and my horse probably doesn't even remember me. My legs are almost as weak as after a relapse, but hopefully I can start up again soon, and I am optimistic that I will get back at least to where I was. In the meantime, I am patiently waiting for a service dog and am once again using the walker because my balance has deteriorated so badly. Well, as they say, you can either give in to the depression and the pain and the deterioration or try to fight it. I am about to get back in the fight. Have missed my on-line family and hope you all have stayed in relatively good health! Sukie427
HELLO AGAIN: Well, I've been away again... - My MSAA Community
HELLO AGAIN
Sukie427 you are a fighter! Stay strong and...consider wearing jimeka 's bubble wrap suit !
First of all BIG HUG. I am so sorry about all that you have been through. You are definitely a candidate for a free purple butterfly bubble wrap suit, as erash as suggested. I hope that you can keep more in touch as you start to feel better. Pleased that you can still stay positive after all that pain. Love and hugs, Jimeka 🤗
Oh, Sukie427 ! Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself, I will think of you! What a nasty time you have had! Sending good thoughts your way!
Sukie427 Oh I hope you’re getting better, keep on moving with your walker. I will say a big prayer for you. Don’t let anything else jump in front of you. I hope you get your Service dog soon.
You have truly been through the ringer! I’m sorry that you have so much with which you’ve had to deal. I pray that your hand heals quickly and life gets a bit easier. I thought Medicare had gotten better for PT. I start on June 1st and have been looking forward to getting neuro PT without having the limitations of my current insurance.
Hi, starlight5 and thanks for the reply. I have gone back to my walker which I can't stand, but the cane just doesn't work any more. Maybe I should try walking sticks. There is so much hiking around here, I could definitely look into it. My problem with every assistive device is that they hurt my back neck and shoulders because I tend to lean on them too hard. Do you find that walking sticks relieve this problem?
Sukie427 Hope you get to feeling better soon. You sure have been through it. You sure do need one of those bubble wrap suits to stay safe. Hope you are able to check in more often.
Jessie
It's so good to have you back. I'll sure be praying that your recovery gets smoother and for no more falls! Please be careful!
Sukie427 My goodness, that's enough for at least a year!! It sounds like you are at least starting to mend. It's good to have you back. I hope your hand PT goes well, years ago when I had a broken wrist, therapy would end with them putting my hand into a bath of warm wax.. It felt so good and my hand would be so soft from the treatment. Please be careful, continue your healing and visit us when you can. Lynn
Thanks, Lynn.
I've seen people using them and, quite frankly, they very painful and difficult.
Oh Sukie427 God bless u and I really hope u are ok after ur recent tumble xxxx 🤔🤔🤔🤔🍫🍫🍫🍫
My, goodness, but you have had a journey. Darn those mesquite bushes...something about them seems to attract us. I've fallen into one, not once...not twice, but three times. Not the same one! Fortunately never broke anything but branches and pride. You're right...we can't give up! Just keep on fighting...but not mesquite bushes because they always win.
Oh, Texandyroe . I have decided that the best way to get back at those little suckers is to use them for smoking or grilling! Since we moved to AZ, I have been careful about cacti and cat-claws and other crazy and evil plants, but I've never had a fight with one before! I guess there's a first time for everything---I don't envy you and you really need to steer clear of those mesquite bushes because you're right--they do always win!
Hi Sukie, I’m sorry you had such a bad fall. You sound like a very tough lady. We need that with MS, although it’s not easy. In answer to your question about the walking sticks, I find they are much easier on the back and shoulders than a cane. It seems safest to stay with the walker until you recover your strength. Good Luck, Linda
Hi, Linda, and thanks for the advice. I am staying with the walker and sometimes, for small distances, will use the cane, which I now have to use in my left hand. I am certainly going to look into walking sticks, though. I've seen people walking in the Grand Canyon and in the trails around here with them. I only hike on 4 legs (I cheat and ride my horse) so I've never had any experience with them.
Riding your horse sounds wonderful. Look what horseback riding does for Anne Romney. 👍
💐😳🌹👍😒oh i sooo miss riding horses!! I used to have 10 of'em on our 35 acre farm... I had the cutest white w/brown spots appolusa pony! I was very depressed when my adopted dad sold them all!! I live too far away in mnt's for to go to horse therapy!!! Waaaa! 😹🙀😳😒
I have a flea-bitten gray Paso Fino whom I have had for 16 years. I trained him myself and we work wonders together! On days when I am not feeling well he knows it and behaves; otherwise he has the cutest personality and does really funny things. It is great therapy, not only for my legs and core, but also for my spirit. Since I haven't been able to ride since I broke my ribs, but I do out and play with him.
Dearest Sukie427 what adventures you have had! I do not wish to share in those adventures and hope you will recover very soon. Best wishes to you!
Man! Go big or go home, people say! You certainly went big! Wow. Hope you heal and get to feeling better soon!!!
Thanks, mrsmike . My, what an interesting name you have!
It was my favorite book growing up. Then I married a Mike so it worked!! My actual name is quite boring...Jane.
I think Jane is a very pretty name, but it seems to have gone the way of my real name, which is Susan. My mom used to call me "Sukie" so that's where I got it.
Where I live there are lots of Susans because we're all from the same generation. I think those names have been left in the 1950s! But they'll come back around--my granddaughter's name is Sophia Rose! Then there are the Charlottes, Emilys and the other old-fashioned names that are coming back around. Everything gets recycled, somehow.
I don't know. Plain Jane. Jane, where's Tarzan? All that stuff gets pretty old. I can't think of much teasing that goes with Susan. Unfortunately I've lived up to...or down to the plain Jane one.
I have a theory about names. I think unusual names skip generation's. My mom was named Nancianne, which she hated and was always called Nan. I married a Mike so my kids kind of got hit with not terribly unusual names but a bit different.
Don't sell yourself short, Jane. If for nothing else, you are on the front lines as an MS Warrior and that makes you a lot more than plain. Your name theory might be right, but my boys have traditional names that seem to endure through the generations: Daniel and Adam. You hang in there, friend, and don't ever think of yourself as plain. You are not that and never will be.
Sukie427, it's Fancy1959. It is so good to hear from you again I have worried that something had happened and boy did it happen. I am so sorry you had to undergo such a severe injury. I'm sending you a big hugs this Electronic Connection to let you know that you're thought of often and missed very much. Please take care of yourself and don't over do it too fast. I look forward to talk and you likely over the next few weeks until you get your sea legs back under you so to speak. Take care and please be careful. Fancy.
