Should I try therapy?

I'm new here and thought I'd ask the opinion of people here. I have struggled with depression in the past and got past it without therapy or drugs but now I fear it is coming back worse than its been in about 3 years. I'm a college student and I'm under a lot of stress so I am leery of going to behavioral therapy because I may not have enough cognitive distortions to treat. What if I am just unlucky in life that things don't go as planned even when I try my best. This is where I feel like I'm at and if its true is it possible that therapy can help or should I just suck it up and deal with curve balls thrown at me like everybody else.

Most people can deal fine with the curve balls of life coz they have good coping strategies. Those who suffer from depression and other mental health illnesses often don't because they are depressed or vice versa.

I am a big fan of therapy and believe it is the only way to deal with painful feelings and emotions from the past and it also teaches you coping strategies. So I would say go ahead and try it. There are quite a few different types so you are bound to find one which helps. x

I think the thought that you need a diagnosed mental disorder in order to go to therapy is a misconception. We could all make great use of therapy, as we all have grown up in families and societies with a certain level of disfunction.

Remember, a diagnosis is the opinion of an expert, but you better than anyone should choose to ask for help if you want.

Apart from that, I encourage you to move away from the (sadly poopular) idea that things like depression are just names for "being weak", that "life is tough for everyone" and you should just "deal with it". Comments like these come from a clear ignorance of the nature of mental states. If it's in your mind, it's real.

So yeah, therapy can help, you should def try it out, but also don't think it'll just 'fix you'. This is not a leg injury in which you go through surgery and it's all done. The path for a mind to come to terms with the world and itself is a very long one, and its science it's not easy.

So I encourage you to go on with the adventure. I think your brain will always keep you slightly above the level of the unbearable, and you will come through the other side stronger than before :)
