Why doesn't my medication work?

Hi Everyone

Just wonder if anyone can give me some feed back on their experiences with fluoxetine. I have gone from 20mg to 40mg and now my GP has told me to try 60mg. I am not overly happy with this but she doesnt feel I should swap at the moment. I feel anxious much of the time and very tearful but not really any better. I have been reading about sertraline . Can any body comment. ? beginning to feel nothing will work. x

I have just started sertraline and even though I can't tell yet whether its working its stopped me feeling tearful and agitated which I felt when I had completely come off citalopram. Personally Fluoxetine didn't work for me and it make me shake and feel extremely blank and numb. I was on 40mg then went on to citalopram then sertraline which i am on now. Hope this helps.

The meds only work in about 1/3 of people and some like me are unfortunately treatment resistant. If you try full dose of 3 different ones without benefit. But it sounds like you are just starting

Hi I tried 2 other ad's before I had sertraline. These suit me very well. I started off on 100 mgs which didn't help, but when it was increased to 150mgs it was a totally different story.

It can be trail and error but you give them time to work in your system and for most people that's between 3-6 weeks. So try the higher dose and if that doesn't help after that time go back to your doctor and try another one. You will get there in the end, so just hold on to that hope. x

Thank you, I hope so but my GP is reluctant to change my medication.

Sartreline is the typical if you have depression a mood lifter. If the trauma is deep-set it will make you feel a bit better but no resolution

Hello - how long have you been on fluoxetine? From what I've read over the years, I'd say if it's more than 3 months and 40mg didn't help it is worth trying something else. It sounds like you wanted to do that, but your GP increased to 60mg?

Sertraline is a good choice. It's quite gentle as they go and people don't tend to suffer too much with side effects, it has a good side effect profile. Docs like it because of this.

You will find something that helps. It can take time. I've been on 6 anti depressants, and finally found something that helps without nasty side effects.

If you're not happy, go back to your GP and explain again how you feel.

All the best - keep us posted.

Much love ❤️

Thanks Clazzy

I was on 30 mg for 3 years after a bad break up but as things improved I weaned myself off them. Then a Christmas things came crashing down and have been pretty bad. My GP just keeps upping the dose and I don,t think its helping, although it did work in the past. Thank you for such a helpful reply.

Hi you have just explained why your GP wants to up your dose and not change your ad! If they worked before they should again. The golden rule is keep taking them until you have better for a least 6 months, then try and wean yourself off slowly.

Sertraline doesn't work well for everyone and even though it suits many of us it won't necessarily help you. I have heard of a few people who suffered nasty side effects and had to stop it.. Better the devil you know springs to mind. x

Everyone is different. It didn't work on me at all and many many others didn't either. The last one I got to was sertraline which did for about 5 years. But then I became down on these. I later found out I had low thyroid levels for years which were causing it. I am not saying this is the same for you but they often tell you your levels are normal when infact they are bottom of the range and going to get worse. I just accepted the normal theory until I became very ill physically then realised it was something else. Depression is a secondary symptom to it. So in my case it was hormonal problems and vitamin deficiencies causing it but of course everyone is different and this isn't the case for all x

Don't dispair I have been through a number of different meds before ending up with 225mg of venlafaxine and 40mg mirtazapine daily to get me stable so that I can start to manage my condition, depression and anxiety.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago so don't expect a quick fix.

Don't fret, you will stabilise and then can start to move on.

Remember (cliche but true) it's always darkest before dawn

Good luck
