Can I have local anaesthetic for Ingrown toenail cutting?

Hi, I have ingrown toenails on both big toes, they are both a bit infected and really sore.

I am going to a private podiatrist tomorrow who said he will try and cut them, I asked about a local anaesthetic, and he said no, only for nail surgery.

I read on an NHS run site that the procedure to correct this would usually be to do a local anaesthetic, cut the nails and add phenol to the sides to stop regrowth. So wondered why privately he's saying no, I'm certainly willing to pay the extra lol

Does anyone know what to usually expect angels should I be ordered an anaesthetic, as I know it will be painful, especially as they are a bit infected.

Why not get the Toe nails removed privately? Yes it's painful. I had one removed 30 years ago due to infected ingrowing. Phenol or similar may not stop the toe nail regrowing.

from a London Podiatry practice:

“We treat ingrown toenails with nail surgery, which is done under local anaesthetic. During nail surgery, once the local anaesthetic is administered, your podiatrist will then remove part or all of the nail.”

I would try a different practice.

I have ingrown toe nails on both big toes. Finally, had them cut back. Ten years later they began to return. Had the ingrown cutback again. In both cases, I was given a local injection administered for the pain. Even with that, it was still fairly painful. But overall,I am very happy with the results!

Hi JayUK1981, Ouch, I kept getting these but someone told me o nick a small V as near to the ingrowing nail as you can and leave it for a few days and it should start getting easier if you have any fungal issues there as well, try using Canesten cream, that's antifungal cream and it does remove the fungal. my pharmacy advised me of this so hope it works for you

Agree with others. Should be a local.

Many years ago now but I had mine done at a local Cottage Hospital in North Wales. Random I know, but I went to our local GP, who referred me to Hospital. After a long wait, the Doc' had a look, said yea, it's an ingrowing toe nail we will book you in ...

Couple of weeks later I was staying with an Aunt and it was getting worse so saw local GP. Ok, come into the Hospital tomorrow. And that was it. Done. With a local.

I was then advised to use Fucidin on a spot of cotton wool under the nail to lift it up.

You can absolutely try another Dr.
