There are 3 points:1) allopurinol will regulate your uric acid levels so you need to take your tablets every day and make sure you never run out 2) allopurinol won't sort out your present attack so take ibuprofen, drink plenty of water and rest 3) Ask your doctor for Colchicine which will help next time when you have a gout attack
I'm permanently on 300mg Allopurinol daily and although I get occasional joint pains, it's nothing like the agonising pain I got when I had full flare-ups. It's true that Allopurinol can only prevent Gout flare-ups once blood tests show that Gout is the cause of the joint pains, but once you are through the worst, maybe your doctor can prescribe a higher dosage to prevent future attacks.
Sorry to hear of gout plaguing you - I know personally how painful it can be.
Having a "mild" drink problem, when it first happened to me a couple of years ago I thought it was due to the traditionally perceived cause - too much port - but I have never taken much of that. However, it seems certain that more than the medically advised alcohol consumption can contribute to the condition, through ethanol interfering with uric acid metabolism, but it's not the only cause, as I have been advised by my GP. I am trying to tackle my drink issues in other ways.
Some medicinal drugs can also raise uric acid levels in the bloodstream, including one that I am taking for hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol).
I tried ibuprofen, but it doesn't seem to have any beneficial effect on my condition, but thankfully a daily dose of 200 mg allopurinol works, keeping the toe joint inflammation at an acceptable level.
You could find out what your GP thinks about a higher level of allopurinol medication.
I was put on a higher dose of allopurinol as well. I have often wondered if there is a link between stress and gout as I often have a mild flare up if I'm worried about something
The allopurinol did it for me, I suffered for about 3 yrs, sometimes the pain was terrible. Ibuprofen etc was useless, allopurinol was a game changer. That said my diet and fluid intake was fairly good, I've always been mindful of what I eat in regards quality and when diagnosed worked nights and ensured I drank about 2 liters of water per shift.Maybe look at your diet and fluid, I know fluid is very important.
