Many couples are dumbfounded to know that they are infertile. It is helpful to know that medical science has devised many treatment methodologies to provide solutions to such situations. Both the male and the female partners are accountable for the rise in infertility cases.

If a couple is having problems in getting pregnant, the main source of the problem is considered to be the woman. But it is necessarily not so. Male infertility accounts for nearly 30 % of infertility cases. Even when the testing procedures are suggested, the women are told to go for them first, but the males should also be directed to go for their semen analysis. The semen analysis test is comparatively easier to conduct. It is crucial for analyzing the morphology, mobility, and density of the sperm. Infertility treatment can be considered after that.

What Does Male Infertility Mean?

Male infertility arises from various factors, mainly from the poor quality of sperms in the semen. By poor quality, we mean these things-

1. Low Sperm Count - It refers to the number of sperms in the semen. While highly fertile males have a high concentration of sperms in the semen, some males tend to have less number of sperms in the semen. If the sperm count is low, there are fewer chances of being successful in impregnating the female partner.

2. Poor Morphology –

The morphology refers to the shape and size of the sperm. Anomalies in the head, tail or mid piece of the sperm can render the sperm incapable of reaching the egg and puncturing its membrane.

3. Poor Mobility – Poor mobility of the sperm hampers its movement and ability to swim up to the egg.

Male infertility Test - How is it done?

You will have to get in touch with a fertility clinic for getting the test conducted. They will confirm you with an appointment date. You will be required to abstain from any sexual activity for two to five days prior to the test. On the day of the test, you will be led to a private room in which you will be left alone. You may require time to do collect the sample, so you can take as much as you require. After you have collected the sample, it will be sent to the laboratory for analysis. The report will be prepared on the same day and delivered to you. If everything is normal, you need not worry. If it is a cause for concern, the fertility experts will be available for advice. This might need another appointment but it will be essential to take advice.

How to Prevent Male Infertility?

Male infertility can be avoided with proper education and knowledge. The concept of biological clock has been associated mainly with women. But in truth, both men and women have it and it is ticking away every moment. While women show signs of biological aging much sooner, males tend to show it later. Sperm count will be lowered due to negative habits like consumption of alcohol, poor diet, and substance abuse. If the man controls these bad habits, he may get his normal sperm count back the natural way. Some other factors also have to be kept in mind like avoiding scrotal heating due to hot baths. Having a sedentary lifestyle also leads to scrotal heating which results in infertility.
