Local anaesthesia experience before circumcision?

I am scheduled for a circumcision tomorrow due to medical reasons. Could you please tell me how painful are these injections in penis? Are these injections and procedure of local anaesthesia really horrible and unbearable?

Well the bearability really depends on you. It's a minor pricking sensation, as the needle is meant to pierce the skin. It wasn't "comfortable" but it wasn't bad either. It is a minor nuisance and really nothing to worry about.

For me the "worst" thing was seeing the penis after it was circumcised, it is an odd sight to say the least xD. Other than that, no pain or problem. But don't be worried to tell the doc if you feel things. After giving you the injection he will wait for it to take effect, and after a while he will squeeze or pinch to see if you feel the pain.

Now you might feel sensations such as touch but it will not hurt.

Thanks Cipher for your response. I am not someone who has a phobia of needles or injections. I am pretty much normal with day to day injections that I take - blood tests, vaccine shots, etc.

However, since this procedure involves 4-5 injections in the penis, I was a bit concerned (still a bit nervous). I hope it will be just like any other injection. I have a couple of questions more and would be grateful if you could kindly answer.

1. Could you also please tell me how long does it take for the anaesthesia to take effect?

2. How long does the effect of anaesthesia remain?

How soon it starts working really depends on your body. Mine was a bit resistant so it took several minutes. It can literally be a span between tens of seconds or a few minutes.

It lasts for several hours, once again depends on the amount used, as I was a bit "resistant" I think I had two doses, if not three. So that could have increased the amount of time it lasted for me. But even when it wears off, you shouldn't really feel pain from the procedure itself.

Cipher My surgery will start tomorrow at 3 pm. The doctor said that the surgery will take about 45-60 minutes and they will let me go home after 30 minutes of observation (I guess probably to ensure that the bleeding has stopped).

Since you have stated that the effect of anaesthesia stays for "several hours", does it mean that I will have pain somewhere around late night while I am asleep?

Also, what kind of pants should I wear right after the procedure? I will be returning to my home on a public transport! Will it be comfortable in jeans?

As I said in the previous post, even if the anaesthesia wears off, you shouldn't feel much "pain" other than maybe "sensitivity" pain when your penis head brushes against something.

For the first days I would deffo recommend not wearing anything, if you can afford walking around naked at your home. Some people stay home for a week or two but I personally only stayed a few days, procedure was on a Thursday if I recall correctly, stayed home Friday/Saturday/Sunday and went back to work on Monday. When you sleep, use two blankets, for top body and for bottom body and leave the penis uncovered.

I would not recommend using public transportation to get home, if you can't have a friend or family member drive you, take a taxi so you can go directly home. Using public transportation is a big no no as someone can accidentally hit you in the groin, or you will be brushing your head right after surgery which can cause irritation and is not good right after the procedure. You can still have minor bleeds on the first day and you don't want blood stained pants. So if there is one thing you can do, deffo get a taxi home and not public transport.

I don't think you have to worry about night pain for the first day as it is about 99% unlikely you would get an erection. It usually starts being a problem a couple of days after the procedure.

As for pants, underwear you want it to be briefs or boxer briefs so its tight to the extent it keeps your penis in one place. You don't want lose boxers so your penis swings around and rubs against the underwear as that is most uncomfortable. Boxer briefs are best for support. Also get medical vaseline without any fragrances and buy gauzes. You put the vaseline on the gauze and then the gauze on your penis head. Helps with the initial friction training of the glans as that is probably the worst part about the circumcision, getting used to not having a foreskin.

Thanks a lot for such a detailed explanation and sharing your experiences. I hope everything goes well tomorrow. In due course of time, I may (most probably will) have more queries and concerns. I would be grateful if you could please answer them in future.

Thanks once again Cipher and regards !

With me, the first injection felt like someone pouring warm water on my penis. After that, I really didn’t feel any of the rest of the injections. No real pain, just a bit of soreness after a couple of days. My doctor wrapped my penis in a compression bandage that wasn’t removed for 14 days, so no swelling at all. I would suggest briefs or boxer briefs. I wouldn’t want my penis moving around that much.

I see. In my case they have said that the bandage will remain in place only for 2 days. I guess there will be more swelling after the bandage is removed.

I would say that would be likely. All

in all, it was not a bad experience for me. No worse than a trip to the dentist to fill a cavity.

How was it?

Hello.. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting initially. The first prick was a bit painful; the pressure due to deposition of 15 mL anaesthesia at the base of penis was more of a burning sensation. However it lasted for some 10-20 seconds and after that it was numb. They gave 4 more injections and each of them felt very little as the anaesthesia had already started to take its effect.

The surgery lasted for about 55 minutes as I had some complications (my frenulum, glans and foreskin had completely attached to each other and had become adhesive due to some chronic infection).

After my surgery, they gave me 600 mg Ibuprofen and 500 mg Paracetamol and I returned home.

It's been 7 hours since my surgery and it is fine till now. They have called me at 8 am tomorrow for the checkup again. They will change the compression bandage and give me medicines.

Thank you so much for asking me. It means a lot.

Glad things went well! Did they have to remove the frenulum as well? What method did they use for the circumcision?

KM1991 profile image
KM1991 in reply toalecp

Yeah. It was a bit complicated. My foreskin had strong adhesions with the frenulum and glans at the lower part. So basically frenulum had become attached with the foreskin due to inflammation.

So they used scalpel and electrocautery to remove these notorious adhesions. This was a chronic infection as they said.

They removed entire foreskin and stitched it behind the corona.

Anyone feeling pain after circumcision due to local anesthesia on penis? its been two weeks, I am feeling pain on nerves (upper side towrds body) when I touch.

KM1991 profile image
KM1991 in reply toglans123

Ideally, the pain or discomfort from the needle prick must not be present at all after a couple of days, if the surgeon/anaesthetist who injected the local was experienced, and did not make any error. It is just like any normal injection, and pain for 2 weeks is highly unlikely.

in reply toglans123

Hey I know this was 2 months ago but I have the same thing on the nerves upper part near the head body side. How long did it last?

I felt 2 serious injections. On to the top side of the penis near the base and another at the lower side of the penis near the scrotum. And a couple more that stings.

The worse part wasn't the needle injection, but the feeling of the anasthesia entering into your penile area from the needle. That sucked. After 5 intense minutes though, you are basically 100% numb.

PS I'm very scared of needles and low tolerance of pain. I would imagine it to be bare able to most people
