Temporary Stop to running...

Hi All,

Unfortunately due to unexpected diagnosis of stomach cancer with 2 lymph nodes affected I’m having to stop running for a while. I’m absolutely gutted, terrified and shellshocked. I only began running on 1st April last year. In less than a year I’ve run 5K, 5miles, 10K and 10mile races and joined a running club. My first HM was to be 14th April my 60th birthday so I’ve had to pull out. On the plus side apparently my age and fitness from running are on my side. Treatment will be confirmed on Thursday but it’s likely to be aggressive chemo, surgery for complete gastrectomy, followed by more chemo. I’m utterly bewildered as I’ve never smoked, have 2 drinks max per week and eat pretty much healthily. On a more positive note I’m not cancelling my Runners World subscription and am aiming to start running again as soon as I can. I’m going to drop off the forum for now but in the words of Arnie ‘I’ll be back’ 👍

Oh Maybe, what a shock for you. You will have quite the journey ahead of you now, but as you say your newfound fitness will stand you in good stead, and you've already proven that you are up to a challenge! Hang on to your positivity and your magazines, the half marathons will wait. Wishing you all the very best over the coming months, sending healing vibes your way and look forward to seeing you back when you are ready 🙂

Hello! I’ve finished chemo three weeks ago and am awaiting a CT to check it’s worked. To build up strength for surgery (hopefully July) I’m going back to C25K tomorrow. Between cycle 3 & 4 of chemo I had an extra week breather to allow bloods to recover a bit. So I felt well enough to run in a 2mile Fun Run. I came in 107 out of 147 runners, in 39mins. I was pleased to get round and get my medal. This run was the first one I did on my running journey, so I had to do it this year. Next year I will do the five mile run 🏃‍♀️

This is good news.... and going back to C25K.... what a great idea.... many of us have done this and we know how useful it will be...slow and steady ( what else) ?

You did brilliantly to run.... and a great time too! A great run to do...

I hope you will keep us posted... and I wish you well with every single fibre of my being for those results...

Next year.. 5 miles... at least:)

I have PMd you too...
