Running Jacket?

Please could I ask for a recommendation for a running jacket? I’ve never had one but hey summer’s on it’s way and I’m feeling the need! 😰

I dislike getting overheated so tend to head out in a short sleeved top and hope to warm up pretty darn quick 😃

The other thing is, I get drawn into looking at brands that are lovely, but expensive. Do I need to do that? Last year I tried on an On Running jacket in black (very sensible) but it was literally light as a feather. Unfortunately the price tag was way heavier

I don’t mind paying for something good that’s going to do the job and last... but I don’t want to just pay for a brand because it happened to be “on trend”!☺️

Suggestions appreciated 🙏

Hi there, I’d avoid jackets at all costs for summer, way too hot! Boil in the bag! 🥵Sounds like you’re doing just fine in your short sleeves, I’m curious as to what makes you think you need a jacket? Or do you mean a vest with pockets and space for a water bladder? If so I’ve got a aonijie one, light weight, cheap, does the job, highly recommended 👍

I think it’s just I was hanging around a bit last week before a run started. Got cold and damp. But you’re right about boil in the bag 😂🥵

Women's Running UK did a feature a few months ago: womensrunning.co.uk/gear/th...

Personally, in summer I'd be avoiding a jacket like the plague, as I really don't cope well with gettting overheated. I have a very basic lightweight fluo lime jacket from Lidl that I got years ago as a hiking/ cycling top layer, and it did the job pretty well when I had to run in a downpour a couple of weeks ago. Generally, though, I'd rather get wet or run at a different time if the rain is really heavy.

However, the maratrail I'm doing at the start of October requires me to have a waterproof jacket, so I'll be checking out the Decathlon one and others when shops re-open.

Hi and thanks for the link. And, you’re right, it seems a weird summer purchase. I’ve got my winter gear but nothing that is waterproof.

It’s also the idea of waiting to begin running and getting cold and damp. Even if take off a layer and tie it around.

Realistically, though, it might not get used🤨

I can totally understand that it's no fun being cold and damp. My solution is to warm up with stretching exercises at home and start running pretty much as soon as I'm out of the door, so I don't get chilled. I don't mind getting wet though.

If you do go for a jacket, make sure it's breathable, otherwise you'll just get damp from the inside out!

Yes that’s a good solution. I’ll probably stick to trusty Ronhill cap and t-shirt 🌸😊🌸

I know what you mean about waiting around and getting cold, personally I hate carrying stuff but am happy to tie a jacket around my waist - but then there’s the flapping that would drive me nuts......😂.....so, when I’ve been to events (in the world that was......) and it’s bucketing down or freezing , I just leave to the last minute possible to either exit the car or drop my bag......and just suffer for a short while....trying to keep moving....😬

I do have a jacket that folds up in itself, like a pac a mac, and turns into a bum bag sort of thing with a elastic belt that would go round your waist- I’ve worn the jacket on runs but haven’t tried it folded up....the thought of it bouncing and spinning around my waist.....😱......

Good ideas, thanks. I know what you mean about something moving around in a run 😳

I got a breathable waterproof from sportshoes . com (higher state one in sale) in the winter but have not worn it at all since about March! I tend to not go out in pouring rain and if I get caught out I'm usually too hot for a jacket! I have got a kind of sports zip through jumper jacket thing that I tie round waist but is useful when chilly after or just before a run, especially in these chilly days of May!

I’m a fan of light, sleeveless zip-ups or hoodies. But I have found them hard to find. I have one nonrunning specific one which is perfect for both summer and winter.

Sounds like a good compromise on a jacket 🌸😊🌸

I’ve got several cheapo run jackets My fave is a £6.99 hooded one from Aldi. I’ve got a lush mint green hooded one from Lidl which was even cheaper - it has two zip pockets though 😃 I’ve got two from SD - Karrimor ones. One is high viz and has tons of pockets, including a huge one at the back They’re all cheap as chips but they wash and wear just fine.

I usually take my jacket with me and tie it round my waist when I get going. Our weather changes all the time so I like to put it back on when it starts raining or gets chilly Also I put it on for the walk home if it’s cool.

I had a running accident one January. I had to wait for help, and the extra layer of the hooded jacket kept me warmer than I otherwise would have been That’s why I generally take one now

No need to spend much at all 🙂👍

Thank you! Some good ideas here. I’ll be off down those middle isles 🌸😊🌸

This is the one I've got...it's windproof, good for light rain and very thin & light so easy to tie around your waist if you get too hot.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-r...

I was originally looking for a more muted colour but there didn't seem to be many in stock for women at a decent price so got this and it's been great when needed.

I say lightly rain proof as I did 10k in torrential rain the other week and got soaked but it's not often I've been unlucky enough to be out in weather like that!

I’ve got that one in pink! My niece got it for me 🥰. It’s good! 😃👍

I ummed & ahhed and couldn't see myself in pink...not that I imagined myself in dayglo yellow either! As with all things running, it turns out, you don't really care, as long as it helps to get you out the door 😊👍

Apparently pink is the most visible I’ve got an Aldi Fluor yellow one too but no pockets

I was never a pink fan but I like my jacket 🙂

I thinks it’s suited my skin as I’ve got older. Or should I say, “old” 😁

I've got mizuno super thin showerproof top layer jacket that squashes up into a tiny pocket. I got it on sale in a run shop for around 25 I think down from 60 odd.

My main jacket is a karrimor (25 quid ish) where the sleeves zip out to create a gilet which I wear right up until it gets really hot then I just keep the mizuno in my hydration pack for just in case 👍🏻

I have a decathlon one, it's only shower proof but is a nice warm up jacket, can't remember the price (but definitely cheap) but it's great for those beginning of summer or beginning of autumn runs where it feels really cold until you run yourself warm but it's too warm for a long sleeved top.

I've mastered the take off and tie round the waist on the run and it is light enough that I've never really noticed any flapping. If it pours with rain, you'll get soaked anyway, but it doesn't cling enough to do the wet t-shirt thing :D

I like the look of the Decathlon ones.

When I started running all those years ago, there was a long post here about what garments you needed, buffs, hats, jackets, base layers, top layers, gloves.....goodness knows where some people are running to need all that stuff...

I don't understand why you think you need a jacket for summer - you mean winter surely? I have several jackets, mostly given to me for volunteering at Cambridge Half Marathon, and I rarely wear any of them....in really cold weather maybe, but never in Summer.
