mouth ulcers do you have them for long periods....

i have had sever mouth ulcers for two n ahalf weeks now to the extent i need to drink throw a straw n can hardly eat at times, none of my medication helping, mouth wash,,, nystan. bonjela,,, i know this may be a side effect of my azathioprine meds, has anyone tried any other methods that have helped this

Hi, I am so sorry you are suffering and I can honestly sympathise. I have been suffering with mouth ulcers all my life, and have had up to 30 at anyone time in the last year (hence my investigation for lupus as I have fatigue etc etc too). I almost ended up in hosp in jan on a drip feed as I simply could not eat or swallow, I begged them not to take me in, despite losing 2 stone in 6 weeks.

I take Prednisolone steroids when the ulcers are at there worst and unbearable, so every other week or so. I take it as a massive whack to the system, so on day 1 start with a 40mg dose and then drop down to 5mg on day 8 and then stop, I have about a week to 2 weeks clear and then they come back and I do it all again.

It may be worth asking if this is something you could try, although it is considered a pretty intense way of getting rid of them.

I recently started on azathioprin to treat them long term, but I am infact allergic to it and it bought me out in Hives, so just waiting on some bloods before we decided what I should start on next.

I also use something called Gelclair, which the doc would need to prescribe you, it is basically a mouth rinse that leaves a protective coating over the ulcer for 23 hours, it is used by cancer patients receiving radio and chemo, it really does work.

I also use anbesol liquid, as this gives instance relief, although I am now allergic to it from over use.

I also use crushed up Oxytetracycline, prescribed by the gp, you crush the tablet and use it as a mouth wash, this helps to get rid of any infection.

For pain I take tramadol and when they are at there worse I have been know to have some lovely oral morphine.

Now this is going to make you go OUCH !! but I also drink 2 cups of organge juice a day and swill it round in my mouth, I find this helps the little ulcers to heal a bit quicker, I have no idea why, but it works for me.

I hope they clear up soon as they are the most rotten thing ever !!!

thank you so much for your reply, on my monthly blood check they alwayzaskif i hav them and i do but usually only a few and they normally go away after 3-4 days, but this attack is severe iam not sure if it the azathriopine that is causing them, as this is why i need monthly blood tests for as with the mouth ulcers my breathing is geting preety bad which is another side effect of this med,, but waiting on results of more blood tests but as i speek thet are still there so i think another trip to the doctor and i will ask if there is anything they can give me as nothing has worked, actually i have just finnished a course of prednisolone steroids 8 day course for chest infection but that had no effect on either of these symptoms and iam back on antibiotics,,, geting fed up with it all to be honest but i will keep trying to get answers, but i will ask my doctor regarding the mouth wash u are on as the 2 am taking dont work but they just the ones from chemist, iam am too on tramadol for pain which helps a little, looking fwd to my orange juice tomorrow thanx.....lol. al try anything, again thank u so much.... mo

I use Sodium bicarb to brush my teeth to keep the ulcers at bay, this also give me a nice pink tongue.

I also suffer with mouth ulcers but not as bad as you. They often appear on one side of my mouth so I have to eat on the other side but at times they are on both sides so I find it hard to eat. I have suffered with these and swollen gums (that push my teeth apart they are that swollen) since being a child. I have not yet found anything to help. I was at the dentist last week and dentist says my gums bleed easily. Hope you find something to help xxx

Awe thanx for reply , yeh my teeth n gums are decaying pretty rappid at the moment and that is a result of medication from longterm use, iam sure i will find an answer to this it just pretty painfull n frustraighting at the moment, but i live in hope, thanx again,,,xx

I have long experiences of Mouth ulcer, Genital & Stomach ulcers for over 30 years caused by Behcet's Syndrome ( one of the rare disease of Auto Immune ). I know mouth ulcer gives severe pain whatever having food. out of 139 days i average 99 days with ulcers, really bad too, at present all my lips are swollen from the ulcers x
