Hello, I’m afraid that I have this too and my best advice to you is to really stay on top of your dental hygiene, as well as the usual ulcer relief, such as bonjela, mouthwash etc. The reason I say about dental hygiene is that I am starting to get loose teeth which is really scary and have just gone and found myself a specialist dentist, obviously with huge costs, to try and get some specialist help. If we weren’t dealing with enough with Lupus already! Anyway make sure your dentist understands the complications of Lupus and hopefully your hospital is on top of it too. I hope you can get the help you need Tigerlilly20 x

I agree with consulting a dentist..mine prescribed some high fluoride toothpaste….this settled down the gum inflammation & eased the other symptoms.

I’d try corsodyl mouth wash and maybe corsodyl dental gel.

Maybe rinsing mouth with water diluted povidone iodine, the one for mouth rinsing, not for skin. In Pharmacy should know which one. I read somewhere that people also used sodium bicarbonate, 1/4 of teaspoon in glass of water and rinse with it. But, maybe it is best to ask some dentist.

I'm in a flare. With awful mouth pain too. It feels like I have a fire inside my mouth. Burning hot.dificult to chew, jaw hurts and tires me out just to chew. You have my sympathy. Do you find it affects your ears? I've terrible tinnitus and have constant noise, it's like I'm in a wind tunnel or under the sea. Driving me bonkers. X

Me too with tinnitus! Do you have a song that keeps going round in your head? I didn’t know that was a thing! Not sure what’s more annoying the wind/buzzing sound or Diana Ross! I have to really concentrate to change the song otherwise it stay on repeat.exhausting x

Suggest you try Anbesol it is much better than Bonjela. Anbesol sticks to the ulcer like glue thus helps the healing process much quicker. I’ve used it. Check the reviews. Can buy at Boots and most pharmacies.

Oraldene or Corsodyl alcohol free mouthwash too.

Best wishes x

hi I’ve had a similar condition ask your dentist to prescribe a speacalist tooth paste the name escapes me but it’s quite popular for dealing with tooth and mouth problems it’s very expensive if you have to buy it hope all goes well

Hi Tigerlilly.

I've had this and it was SO painful. I was told by my rheumy to use a steroid mouthwash if you can find one (I couldn't).

Alternatively, which I had to do, you can dissolve soluble betamethasone 500mcg in about 5-10ml of water and use that. Another alternative is Flixonase nasule drops, again diluted in a little water. Both can be used as a mouthwash and do help. For me, it didn't see it off completely but, eventually, a more experienced rheumy put me on calcium folinate daily except for my methotrexate day. That has given the best result for me.

I hope this helps and you get it sorted asap.

hi Tigerlilly, I use gengigel mouthwash and gel that you can rub on the inside gum & roof, I tend to use it on my lips too when they break out. Not sure if it has the same affect as other makes, that others have mentioned. But this is the one I like the best. You can’t eat or drink for 30 minutes after using it.

I only use it just as starts to flare and It does seem to keep the the mouth to a minimum. When its all ‘calm’ I use biotene mouthwash before brushing and a toothpaste that doesn’t have SLR ( no foam) I must be doing something right as at 68 no loose teeth yet 😉

Have you checked with GP that there isn’t a bacteria causing the problem? It might be worth it. Hope you get some relief soon and it settles quickly.

I use gengigel for mouth ulcers. Drink fluids such as water. Central heating dries out Sjogrens etc more. Plus diet for some chocs and of course sugar. Mouthwash Biotene is good as is the spary to use as needed. I use mouthwash at night when wake up with a dry mouth. Swish and spit into a cup stuffed with tissue to catch liquid. That way I stay tucked up in bed. Xlimelts are a must in mouth at night. Use eye drops more this time of year as help keep all facial glands working better. Salivax for getting saliva moving. Plus all the tips here re toothpaste and regular oral treatment. Good luck

I have severe Sjigrens and had 4 teeth out yesterday, so I am in the same boat - she had difficulties in removing the roots and my mouth is so sore and inflamed! Just 6 to go now, all rotted from the inside out - nasty disease 😥

These things are helping ...

1 tsp salt in lukewarm water, rinse your mouth out thoroughly and spit out, do about 5 times, will help to keep your mouth clean. Do every few hours

For the ulcers - Bonjela/Ambesol Teething Gel or something I find more effective, IGLU Gel

Pain wise for my mouth I usually use dispersible Aspirin for my toothache, but if your gums are bleeding, not a good idea as could make it worse - after the dentist yesterday I went and bought some sachets of Beechams Cold and Flu Hot Blackcurrant, and I have been taking that every 4 hours for the pain, use it as a mouthwash before you swallow so that it gets into the nooks and crannies and hits the sore bits directly - that has been helping me no end overnight and this morning and once the anaesthetic wore off.

Best of luck!

hi. Maybe worth checking if you have secondary sjorgrens and / or an allergy to SLS in normal toothpaste and mouthwash. I do and know how awful the mouth feels- burning, ulcers, bleeding gums, cracked lips etc. I now use biotene SLS free toothpaste and what a difference. It still has the same amount of fluoride but no SLS and has been a game changer. There are other brands my rheumatologist recommended eg Squiggle, but biotene is available on my repeat prescription from my GP. Wishing you well

Should have said: SLS is sodium laurel sulphate.

Hi Tigerlilly, I’m sorry you’re suffering so much, I have similar issues and according to my hygienist my dental care is excellent. So I know that’s not contributing, the only thing that’s really helped me is using a salt water solution to swish around my mouth. I use bonjela too but I’m not sure it does much for me apart from make my mouth burn. Hope you find something that helps you.

Hi. Unfortunately it's an all too common problem with Lupus and related medication. The one mouthwash I found helped is Biotene. It's designed for people on Chemotherapy, not as harsh as other mouthwashes and puts a coating on the inside of the mouth. If your gums are bleeding it might be worth getting checked for infection.

Hi, I get a lot of mouth ulcers as part of Lupus SLE, particularly when I am tired, run down or having a flare. I find more than anything rest helps as it’s a sign for me that I need to look after myself more. I try to avoid sugary, acidic or salty food and get early nights and exercise more. They tend to clear up on their own, I don’t use any over the counter treatments for this. Hope you feel better soon.
