Hi! I have an appointment with the cardiologist tomorrow. I have a history of A-Fib and PVCs and take meds for that. My cholesterol and triglycerides are high and have been for a long while. My former GP didn't want to add any more meds and was concerned about the side affects. My new GP who is very thorough is concerned about the cholesterol and triglycerides linked to my lupus and high blood pressure. He thinks I should be on statins and said I should discuss with the cardiologist tomorrow. Any thoughts or advice?
Healing hugs.

Hi Pumpkin I’ve been in statins for 3 months now due to high cholesterol I also take a load of others meds for lupus- my cholesterol has come down already so got to stay on them but I’ve had no side effects from them what so ever xx
Thank you so much for letting me know that you are doing all right on them. My new doctor pointed out how high my risk could be for a heart attack or stroke. I am thinking the cardiologist will agree with him.
Yes lupus patients are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke so we need to be very careful - I’m fully recovered from hysterectomy thank goodness but am having a flare at the moment probably due to everything medically I’ve been through recently but Bea & Mira are all the medicine I need 🐶🐶❤️
Hi Pumpkin I’m afraid l can’t help you with the statins advice but thought l would just write that I’m going down the cardiology route at the moment, l have lupus sjogrens and PBC I didn’t know that lupus can cause heart problems. I have been told that l have to stop taking plaquenil as it could be causing my problems which so far are palpitations and tachycardia.
kingsnorth, I was taken off of plaquenil a few years ago because the doctor thought it was causing my hearing loss. The ENT doctor felt that it was lupus possibly responsible to the hearing loss, not plaquenil. After being off plaquenil was when I developed A-Fib.and other issues.I am back on plaquenil for some time now again and it does not seem to cause my heart issues, but the cardiologist said that they are probably from lupus. The A-Fib and PVCs were stable. Then after Covid, they returned. After a few meds increases, they are mainly stable again. Let me know how you do with the cardiologist. Wishing you all the best.
Thanks for your reply. I have just had a 12 wire ECG and apparently it’s normal so l expect l will be staying on the plaquenil. I also had a blood test to see if I’m low on magnesium. My Bisoprolol has been increased so will let you know how l get on.
Hi - yes, I have just been put on statins as well because of high cholesterol by the rheumatologist. I have mixed connective tissue disorder and had a recent diagnosis - and was put on hydroxychloroquine. Will see what happens with the next lot of tests after having been on the statins for a while.
Thanks, Vrin. I will if the cardiologist agrees with the GP.
Healing hugs.
Statins have a lot of side effects can cause dementia etc and I'm daft enough, so I went natural and started taking chia, flax and multiseeds get them all from Aldi just put on cereal or yogurts x
There has cholesterol has lowered has also help IBS symptoms, I would rather try natural remedies as quite sensitive to drugs ie gabapentin hands were all swollen within 2 weeks, so stopped that Adcal D3 ruined my nails were soft flaky and painful so take vitD3 and OK, everyone is different it's trial and error x
There are lots of different statins drugs and some may have less side effects than others.
A relative stopped taking one sort due to tightening of tendons, particularly in hands. I believe this happened over a few years and was not noted in documented side effects.
Maybe check this does not happen, and if there are issues then find another one - I think choice is wider now.
I have never had high total cholesterol but am on a high statin dose as part of my post stroke protocol. I have secondary APS and statins are proving very helpful in treating autoimmune disease. I am on 40mg Lipitor with zero side effects.
