Hypothyroidism, Lupus and high cholesterol

Hi

Just wanted some advice from you wise ones. My lupus has been in remission for almost two years now and am feeling good. Recent blood tests revealed that I have high cholesterol despite having a very healthy life style and healthy diet. I know that low thyroid impacts on the cholesterol levels. My doctor has put me on statins which I am reluctant to start. If I can manage whatever condition naturally I will give it a go. I have given myself three months to try and settle my cholesterol with diet and if it is still high will have to go statin way. Any thoughts? I hate to take tablets willynilly.

Hi. Please post on the ThyroidUK forum, they are absolutely amazing and will give you loads of advice. When I had high cholesterol it was because I was hypo. I increased my medication and it went away :)

Hello, a lot of research has come out in recent years regarding the victimizing of cholesterol as a cause of cardiovascular disease. As we learn more and realize that drug companies also push to sell their drugs we learn that eveythign we know about cholesterol may not be true. Statins can cause wide reaching harm to the mitochondria in your body thus why may people get muscle pain when they take them as they harm the mitrochondria and deplete Coenzyme Q10. There are quite a few functional doctors, nauropaths and nutrient is t who are starting to spread the word that cholesterol is not the bad one, blood sugar and triglycerides can be. I shared this article below. You can also read more on cholesterol with Dr. Martin from Canada, (Martinclinic.com).

Thank you for the information. I am more concerned about the side effects of the drug than the benefits. Am also too aware of the pharmaceutical industry strategies. I have decided to try and lower my cholesterol by natural means, diet etc. and will have to disappoint my doctor by refusing Statins. According to the risk assessment I am at 20% risk brackets. So I will have to work on that. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

You are welcome! I think you are so smart to do so and educate yourself before trying a medication that has harmful side effects. I too have “high” cholesterol and have been recommended statins. My ratios are very good and my triglycerides which are the harmful of the bunch is low.

If you read anything from the Martin clinic and his podcasts, some countries like Japan are promoting having higher overall cholesterol levels for good health and long life. They have even went so far as to say low cholesterol shows a shortened life span.

Best of luck, 😁

You didn't say anything about the hypothyroidism? Are you on Levo? Yes, autoimmune thyroiditis can cause high cholesterol, (even when on Levo, in my opinion). You can bring it down without statins. I did it on a 800 calorie a day diet (natural yoghurt and berries for b/fast, then fish and veg for tea every day). Boring as hell, and certainly not doable long term!

Hi Blue Feather

Have been taking Levo for the past thirty years when I got diagnosed with Lupus. I’m also off Hydroxy. My Levo is reduced to 100mcg. I have made some radical changes to our diet in the hope that it will regulate my cholesterol level. No processed food if I can help it, breakfast is half a banana and an apple. Eating a lot of fruit instead of a biscuit with my tea. Fish has always played a prominent role on our plates. Legumes and beans have now replaced red meat, no butter, trying to avoid any animal fat. Husband has been on statin for years and always complaining of pain in his legs, hence I don’t to go down that way. I am trying to be imaginative to a boring diet by varying cooking style. Using the air fryer, salads. Will have to persevere until the next blood test.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

Mine came down from 5.5 to 5. Like you l am trying to avoid statins. I stopped with the dieting after 4 months because it gave me elevated liver enzymes. Hopefully you'll have a better experience! I suspect, but cannot prove it, that people with Hashi's will always battle more with cholesterol than those without Hashi's.
