I have SLE and I've always dyed my hair. I haven't put any dye in my hair since early November. I had a flare up after Christmas my hair went from past my shoulders, it was getting longer, then all of a sudden it started breaking off at the ends tremendously and when I ran my finger through my hair or brushed it my hair little bit of hair would would come out like if you ripped a hairbow out. It went on from the end of Christmas all the way to the beginning of this month and has finally stopped and now my hair is chin length all around it looks like I cut my hair into a messy bob bc it all broke off and thinned out. it all and I had alopecia as a child but it went away once I hit 4 to 5 years old. My question is with this information would it be alright to dye my hair I have a box of dye I've used before and ive never had a bad reaction to it, but I'm questioning if I should wait longer before dying by hair because with how short it became in a month without cutting it, I dont want to lose more of my hair?

Dying Hair After Flare Up is it safe?
Hi have SLE too, It is also dyed blonde which I do myself at home. I have some breakage one one side of my hair, very strange anyhow if I were you I would just dye a small patch of hair underneath were it can’t be seen , if you get further breakage then perhaps wait a while - good luck

LinAlaina, I would also, perhaps, go to a salon and have someone who sounds like they know what they are doing color your hair under the circumstances you mentioned. You might want a fresh cut to go with your newly, shorter hair?
May I suggest getting a bottle of high quality Biotin? It’s a supplement that helps with the strength and health of skin, hair and finger nails. Maybe try a good hair growth shampoo system such as a Ovation Hair or Nioxim, or one the salon suggests. They are a bit expensive, but so worth it to help get your hair back on track. Best of luck.
I dye my hair regularly. I actually bleach it (which brings its own problems as my skin reacts quite angrily to the bleach) and then add colour usually a week or so later so as not to overload. In the past I have had serious issues with weak hair and tried many things. Now I tend to add coconut oil (the pure stuff) when washing it after bleaching or dying to add plenty of moisture and add strength. It works a treat! I also use a lot of conditioner including a stronger one after a regular type which I leave in for 5-10 minutes before washing out. I tend to add the coconut oil with the first conditioner. My hair is now nearly waist length!
Before I started all this I had a lot of damage to the ends of my hair that was looking scraggly so went to the hairdresser and had it cut. It was as long as now and I took it back to my shoulders to get rid of the damage. Now it is much healthier and I am happier. Best of luck. I found the coconut oil on amazon but many places sell it.
Since I.became a Lupus patient, I’ve had real problems using hair dyes as every time I do my scalp becomes unbearably itchy and the ends of my hair just ‘snap’ off. I didn’t bother with dying my hair for a year until I came across a great hairdresser who used a semi-permanent professional dye - brands such as LOreal and Revlon and they work brilliantly. I’d avoid anything off the shelf as they contain too much bleach. and to be on the safe side wait until you are not in the middle of a flare. So much weird stuff happens to us all during that time. Good luck xx
