Tooth loss and Lupus

I need advice please. I have Lupus with Sjögren’s overlap. For about 2 weeks I have had extreme sensitivity when biting with my front teeth. At the same time my lupus symptoms worsened, lots more pain in bones and muscles so I thought the teeth sensitivity was part of it. Yesterday I was eating a basic salad and suddenly I could feel something hard in my mouth. I looked and it was one of my two central top teeth. It was not the whole tooth it looked as if it had been sliced in half VERTICALLY. The root and the other half part of the tooth is still there! I’m seeing the dentist tomorrow (had to pay privately as they said nhs would have to wait until 17th April) I’m so worried the others are going to do the same. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have dreadful problems with my teeth despite using artificial saliva, constantly sipping water and all the other suggestions. The lack of saliva ( I had right side saliva gland removed years ago) is a big issue and I seem to be at the dentist frequently I ve had 3 teeth snap in half over last 6 months and all my teeth are very sensitive due to lack of enamel due to Sjorgrens, the near future holds implants or false teeth I’m sure!

I don’t have sjogrens but I do have Lupus and osteoporosis. I suffer from a very dry mouth of a nighttime even though I drink a cup of water throughout the night. In the last 6 months I have had 3 teeth fracture and need repairing and like you I have enamel loss, I also have a loose tooth which I am dreading having removed. I am petrified of the dentist and try my best to look after my teeth but to no avail.

Hi there. I have systemic sclerosis and Sjogren’s and all my teeth are presently eroding fast. I’ve been advised by a doctor of restorative dentistry to buy fluoride mouthwash and a tube of something called Tooth Mousse on Amazon to try and save my teeth from all needing to be extracted. Apparently I’m high risk of a scary illness called osteonecrosis if this happens due to my treatments and conditions. I’m using it daily but haven’t noticed much change to my saliva so far - still got a horrid sensation 24/7 and rely heavily on sugar free sweets and gum.

However, in your case, the broken toothcould just be wear and tear rather than Lupus or Sjogren’s related - although dry mouth of Sjogren’s will make this more of a problem I’d guess. I say this because my husband, who has no autoimmune diseases, was just sitting chatting to me when half his front tooth came out just like that two days ago. It’s an upper incisor and he got an urgent appt with his dentist today. They X-rayed and found his root was fine so he’s been given a temporary crown and will get a permanent one put in in May. My husband explained he wasn’t chewing and takes good care of his teeth but his dentist just shrugged and said it just happens sometimes “wear and tear you know!”

If you have dry mouth from autoimmune conditions your dentist ask your dentist to prescribe a high fluoride toothpaste called duraphat. Its only available on prescription and has much higher fluoride than over the counter toothpaste.

My rheumatologist said that I should use Durphat 5000 at night and a normal fluoride toothpaste in the morning and remember not to rinse after I've finished brushing. He couldn't prescribe it so I need to ask my dentist who has prescribed it in the past. I had one of my teeth do the same thing and ended up with a crown I'm terrified of the front ones breaking

I used Duraphat for around 15 years due to problems with my teeth ! I have both sjorgrens and CT disorder. Unfortunately 3 years ago my 4 bottom teeth just came out. It was post virus time and my dentist gave me a quote for implants that I could never justify so went abroad for a 1/4 of the price and haven't looked back since

Forgot to say I had sensitive teeth before I started using it and don't now.

My teeth got ridiculously sensitive and could not eat anything without pain couple months back. I got some Colgate Fluorigard Fluoride rinse from supermarket and after the first use sensitivity reduced.

Now using this once a week. Need to keep in mouth for a minute, swiling around before spitting out. Then avoid eating, drinking or rinsing out for 15 minutes.

Also gums sore and teeth keep going loose. I got some Gengigel mouth wash recently too. Now rinsing with a little bit of Gengigel mouthwaah. Mouth less dry at night and can sleep better.

Found it all difficult as pharmacy did not know what to do or have these things in stock. Got both at supermarket.

I get this coming and going with no explanation. I nearly had a £1000 root filling recently but waited a few weeks and the pain went but at the time it was awful. It's so random. Anyway the dentist said try using Sensodyne toothpaste all the time and either it worked almost immediately or the pain went at the same time.

Hi, I’ve been to the dentist and he stuck it back on! I’m flabbergasted! It’s only temporary until I go back on 17/4. This appointment was paid for privately (£109) but on 17th it’s back to NHS and the maximum it will cost is £260 unless the government change the rate. The6 are going to cap it. Fingers crossed.

That's good, I hope it goes well on the 17th.

My crown came under Band 3 £319.10 but the rates are going up on the 1st April to £27.40 for band 1 (check up) Band 2 (fillings) £75.30 and Band 3 (crowns dentures etc) £326.70 .

Where do you live? In Wales where I live band 3 is £260. The dentist said they don’t know yet if it will go up in April.

I live in Harrow Greater London, just shows the difference between the Welsh and English NHS charges

Yes, big difference. When we had free prescriptions first my English sister in law said “yes and we are paying for that out of our taxes!”. Er, NO that comes out of our money allocated to us under the Barnet formula from the money we have paid in to the UK parliament coffers. We get back less than we paid in. The Barnet formula was done by population, I believe, and is out of date as Wales is more densely populated now and would get a higher share of money. I do believe that the English charges should be brought down to the same as ours. People are struggling financially all over the UK. It’s so sad.

Lucky you have an nhs dentist. Although swings and roundabouts, you get more time and better quality of filling material etc. with a private dentist but you pay 3 or 4 times the nhs fee. I don't know what's best but just getting a regular dentist is a bonus with our teeth.

Yes I’m lucky. We have been with this dentist business for 24 years under lots of different ownership. They are about 15 miles away from us but I dare not change asNHS dentists are difficult to find. I used to live near the dentist business before.

I'm now on the books of three dentists but don't want to see any of them, each for a different reason.

I used to have marvellous dentists previously.

and ..

Eye care seems to be going the same way. Eye hospitals insisting on referral by opticians who won't see patients free of charge for a chronic condition ( their typically three a day NHS minor eye conditions appointments only being for a new condition a person has never had before).

Meanwhile GPs have relinquished reviewing patients, saying opticians have testing and imaging equipment not available at their surgery.

'Game of parcel the parcel', with nothing getting sorted out, and some just making lots of money from it.

Its like it with everything. I spoke to the Gp about bladder problems. He gave me a number in Swansea to phone, 10 miles away. They sent me a form to complete. Filled it in and they said they would arrange an appointment by post. When the letter came it was for an appointment with a bladder nurse- across the corridor from the GP I had seen! What a waste of money and time. It’s all gone crazy. A relation had severe back problems. She had Benenden healthcare cover. They sent her to a specialist. He had a scan done and told her she needed an operation urgently but Benenden would not pay for the £10,000 fee. She went to see NHS GP again who said she needed an MRI scan done. She showed the GP the scan results and she said they could not accept a private scan and made her wait to have another NHS one! What a waste!!
