Hi, I been newly diagnosed with lupus and I've started to get a red stinging hot rash on my face. (cheeks/bridge of nose) When I say rash, it's better described as looking and feeling a bit like sunburn and appears when I'm tired and feeling a bit rundown. Is this related? Thanks

This sounds exactly like a typical malar rash, which is actually one of the symptoms used to diagnosis lupus, as many of us get it. It is induced quite often my UV exposure, sunscreen helps some. If you look up lupus malar rash you will learn all about it and how uv can actually trigger lupus flares as well as contribute to other rashes we get. I get the malar rash so badly that even being under fluorescent lighting for 15 mins makes it pop up and yes it feels like a sunburn for me as it’s starting. During flares I’ve had to to the point my skin was so damaged it looked all dry and peeled off. I also get it badly on the backs of my hands and fingers. The areas that see the most light tend to get it the worst because uv exposure triggers a immune response and since our immune systems are broken it mistakenly attacks our skin and causes damage. There is lots of info on it and all the ways lupus attacks the skin and body. When I was first diagnosed I did a lot of reading on it and it really helped me understand what was happening and possible things I could avoid that help a little bit.
Thanks very much Terrier_lady for your informative advise, really appreciate it
If it is a malar rash, it's a good idea to use SPF 50. I've been ordered to, year round.
Edited to add: take selfiies when the rash is there, to show your consultant.
Thanks, I will do
Hi CarolMc1,
Have you discussed this with your GP or rheumatologist?
The description of your symptom resembles those associated with a malar rash; we are not medically qualified so it is important that you check this with your doctor.
Up to 60% of people with SLE will develop a malar rash; the pink or redish-coloured rash mainly occurs on the cheeks and the bridge of the nose.
A malar rash can appear when disease activity is higher and/or when a person is exposed to certain triggers such as UV light. We published a factsheet on ‘LUPUS: and Light Sensitivity’ which I hope will be of help to you: lupusuk.org.uk/wp-content/u...
It is important to bear in mind that lupus presents differently in everybody therefore, it is unlikely for two people to share the exact same experience.
Please keep us updated, wishing you all the best.
Hi Chanpreet_Walia. Thanks very much for your advise. The rash just started about two weeks ago. I'm not seeing my rheumatologist until April but I have an appointment in Jan with the rhumatology nurses so will mention it to them. Thanks again
