Hi all I am just wondering if an ANA test sis a definite test for lupus. I have been having the odd aches and pains along with the odd headache, fatigue, weird fizzing sensation inside my body among other things and have had raised crp and esr levels for around 3 months now. Yesterday I had a ANA blood tests and the surgery called me today too say I need too make an app too speak with the doctor about my results which has got me very worried.

ANA blood test results
mine is always high, I always get told its not a definite answer to say you do as it can be high in healthy people too.
Oh right okay thank you for your reply I am just worried but obviously want to know whats going on with my body
No i do understand it is really stressful trying to get a diagnosis when you know your body is not right... How high was your ana test?
I know its awful I feel like I keep getting fobbed off by my GP's and I am not sure yet will know tomorrow the result when see the GP. Test was taken yesterday and surgery called me today asking me too make an appointment too go in and discuss them they only do that if there is something wrong with the results.
well hopefully you will get more answers tomorrow, if you do get a diagnosis tomorrow or they refer you to see a rhumotologist I wouldn't be dis heartened you need to think positive that you will finally get a diagnosis. Even though its a hard road having lupus, it is a weight lifted off you shoulders to be told there is something wrong with us and we don't feel fobbed off.
I agree I am trying to stay positive no matter what happens its just so hard isn't it I also suffer with health anxiety so makes it feel 1000% times worse. Thank you for replying though does help speaking to people who understand.
Hello hope you are well. Got my ANA results back today apparently no further action needed so should be okay x
Hi chelsealouise33x ,
The antinuclear antibody (ANA) test detects a group of antibodies directed against components of the nucleus of the cell, such as DNA and ribonucleoproteins (RNP). The individual antibodies include anti-DNA antibodies and the various anti-ENA antibodies. The ANA test is used as a screening test for these auto-antibodies which may then be identified individually by other tests. The ANA test is positive in about 95% of people with lupus but only about 5% of healthy people. It can also be positive in people with related autoimmune conditions (sometimes called connective tissue diseases) such as dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). It is sometimes positive in people with other types of disease such as chronic infection or certain malignancies (cancers). It is therefore not diagnostic of lupus, but it is important supporting evidence when other features (symptoms, signs and other laboratory tests) suggest lupus.

Good luck with your appointment. Let us know how you get on.
